could be water parameters! what are they?is the surving ram a male?what other fish are in the tank? maybe bullying!did you acclimatise the new fish? |

Right here goes,PH about 7ish,4 angels 2 gourami,lots of BNs,2 kribs,2 corydoras,1 spotted dora,4 danioni, the tank is a 6ft. |

yes i did acclimatise them about hal an hour. |

yes it a male , sorry. |

|
what about your other water parameters? how longs the tank been setup? |

What is the nitrate reading and what is the exact PH. I think Rams do prefer soft water as well |

|
2 yrs, nitrate is 0,nitrite is 0,Ammonia is 0.25. |
19-09-2007 15:05 by spurson

p.h 6.8 |

|
Need to have low nitrate reading as well, they need really clean water as well |
19-09-2007 15:16 by Nick G
|
Zero nitrate???
I thought it was only possible in marines
Might be worth taking a sample to your LFS as this nitrate reading seems wrong to me (I could be wrong though) |

Especially with a redaing showing on amonia |

ok it could be the picked on by the male that you have, however a 6 foot tank size should have room for it to hide.2 kribs may be to blame.
some shops keep their rams in Ro water like discus so it may be a water quality issue..
or just a bad purchase did the fish look 100% healthy in the shop?
beautifull fish i love them

Your cribs could be to blame if they are a pair, possibly something wrong with water that other fish are used to but not for new fish, they need soft water, i have bred these myself and if water is not right they can soon go down hill (bad stock) |
19-09-2007 19:57 by spurson
|
the fish was fine for about 20 / 25 mins then disapeared the next thing i knew it was struggling to keep upright then it ,i put it in a breeding net then it died??,nothing seemed to touch it. |

|
just done another water test and the ammonia is 0.25. |

water conditions must be different to that at the shop! to me it sounds like it died from shock.......for it to die so soon!
take a sample of water along with dead fish if its a decent shop and your water tested by the shop turned out to be perfect then they should give you a new fish.
i have had a couple of free fish from a shop that i have a good relationship with |
19-09-2007 20:12 by spurson
|
i also spoke to the shop he said he dos`nt want the fish but to take a water sample and if its ok he will replace it so thats ok, Thanks folks you have been great, John.. |

if your ph is 7 then that 0.25 is within the maximum limit of 3.6 at a temperature of 25 deg C and ph of 7
to have any reading it shows a problem with your filter! have you cleand it recent and some how caused the good bacteria to die? |
19-09-2007 21:05 by spurson
|
no robert ,i`vecleaned it how i always do and never had a prob?i`m stumped i think it must have been shock??. |

ok well can you do me a favour.....when the shops tested your water , let us all know the results and how you got on!

Right peeps, it seems my testing kit was the problem
I took a sample and had it tested and heres what i got,KHtest=2 drops should be 7 / 8 drops, Ammonia test=1.0 mg/L,Nitrate test=80.0 mg/L should be 0.0 / 10.0 mg/L, so i`m sorry to have wasted your time but thanks |

The bloke in the shop tried to get me to buy some "Bacineetes" i didnt as i thought i would go with the water changes and some KH Plus, but has anyone used it and more importantly does it work??. |

hello spurson, what filtration/media are you using? also what water changes do you do?nowadays most folk frown on ceramic tubes + bio balls as they're considered to be nitrate factories, although i still use em in my fresh water tanks,i clean em + all sponges in tank water every water change,i also opt for alfa grog as a media, very ifficient in my oppinion, also you could be feeding too much, try cutting down on food, clean ya filters, + do 20% water changes twice a week for 2-3 weeksyou should notice a vast improvement, also you could try a chemical filter, maybe rowaphos or greenaway could help ya,just whack em in ya filters...hope this helps cheers terry |

Terry, i`ve got a 50 gal tank and use sponge filters there are 3 of different guages , i`ve been doing a 10% water change every 2 weeks and clean the sponges once a month??,as for feeding you are probably right as the missus is always moaning that the fish look hungry !!. |
21-09-2007 14:16 by spurson
|
I`ve got a pond and when i started it i put some A.B.A bacteria in the filter, could i use it in my tank and would it help??. |
21-09-2007 15:15 by telboy
|
if i were you id invest in a decent external filter, also id up the water changes to 20% weekly mate, cut down on feeding to every other day,get a new test kit |
21-09-2007 20:42 by spurson
|
yep Tel i got one today a "Phoenix" water test kit it does Ammonia x 20,Nitrite x 20, Nitrate x 20 and PH x 50, should be ok?? |

i dont understand how something can be a nitrate factory, its simple chemistry ... nitrate is the result of the breakdown of waste products ,and within a closed system its simple, the amount of nitrate produced is in line with the amount of waste . a filter cant make EXTRA nitrate it only processes the existing waste, if you want to remove nitrate then it has to be done in other ways (resin, plants ,water changes etc)
some good advice on this thread for a change though |

Big cats i think its thought that they harbour the nitrates in traped matter within the bioballs, clay tubes.......well thats how i thought it became a factory ( i may be wrong on this ) |
