hi everyone, im setting up a fish house, at the moment its still in the planning stages but it will be a decent size, hopefully big enough to get 100tanks in if need be, basically i want tips on keeping the running costs down, what heating would be the best, filtration etc etc.....how much generally are people paying to run one of these, ive heard varied reports on prices so id like abit of feedback off anyone who does have one, all the pointers i.e dos and donts and i would be gratefull of any other tips! cheers guys

insulate the fish house with as much as poss.
we use 1 air pump(250lt a min)that feeds 1 1/2 inch tube that runs all the way round the top of the fish house, all air pipes are pushed in to holes that are drilled in to the pipe (where needed)these holes are just a bit smaller than the air pipe so they seal themselves when pushed it to the main pipe, these then feed all the tanks,95% have air powered filters which are either plastic tub's or a piece of glass siliconed into the corners of the tanks, with filter wool and an up lift tube in(home made)
if you want any pic's of these plz ask
heating is taken care of by a dehumidifier and a small fan heater.
so far running costs are about £2.50 a day(does not include food)

i would make a plan of where everything is going b4 you start to build(we are in the process of removing part of one of the walls so we can get a 5x2x2 tank in)
if you want some more pics plz just ask

hi
lol

its easy to do your own tanks
most of the ones i made are 18x8x8
the glass was free of charge and cut to size.all you need is silicone(the propper stuff)masking tape and some meths
use the meths to clean the glass
put a beed of silicone where the glass will touch build it up and then hold it in place with tape, run your finger round the inside to flatten the bead of silicone down and to make it look better.leave for 24 hrs then fill with water.
we still have a lot of glass left over if you need any?
will take some pics later(i have to go out now)

how big is your fish house?
is it a shed or part of your house?
mark

its going to be a garage extension, basically as big as i like, i want it too easily hold 60-100tanks, mostly smaller tanks but with the odd big one thrown in for larger breeding fish or colonys of fish, the walls are going to be breeze blocked and fully insulted, and some of the glass would be great if you could get it too me

pic of the tank
the small bit of glass does not go all the way down there is a small gap at the bottom
the up lift tube is just a bit of plastic tube with the air in pushed in to a hole about 1/2 inc up from the bottom

if you go on ebay
put in air pump
i think its pond supplies do a 250 or a 450lt/min piston pumps for about £60
i will try to find the link for you
we use a 250 lt a min pump this is pleanty for our shed
you could get the 450 one and bleed off what you dont need,at that price i would get 2 so you have a spare just in case the main one packs up.

i forgot on the bottom of the up list tube we used 90 degree elbows as this stopped the air pipe from kinking.thes were about 8p each and instead of using air line taps we use the clamps as there were alot cheaper and just as good (i am a tight wad)
