Posted Issues with Acara Eggs?
26-09-2007
20:10 by Fry Lover
My x2 Blue Acara's (approx 5" each) that i have had for about x2 weeks have laid eggs.

This happened in-between 2am and 9am Monday morning, i know this as i was watching them eagerly preparing to spawn, and at 9am there was eggs (stopped watching them at 2am)

So now, its 19:45 Weds, the eggs were laid between 52-59 hrs ago.

My concern is, about 30% of the eggs (there must 100-200 in total) are completely white, i am used to seeing some white eggs from egg layers but never this money. The other 70% (approx) are the normal light brown colour.

The white eggs are not grouped together, they are spread out.

I was wondering if the whole batch is likely to be no good, OR if the other ones havent turned white by 52-59hrs after being laid are they likely to be fertile and ok?

Obviously i'll know in about another 12-18 hrs?

Whats the average time for them to hatch, if you say x3 days, i assume thats approx 72 hrs? I am working in hours here LOL

There are pics of the Acara's on another recent thread, perhaps they are both females?

chances are that the white ones are just infertile eggs, youre best off removing them before it spreads

well i hope its just the white ones being an issue Woz, obviously the white are inferrtile, just hoping the browns are ok. I am not going to interfere, as it would be tough taking out the white ones without risking messing up the brown ones.

I am just wondering if x2 females spawned, how long would it take for the eggs to go white?

Wont the parent fish pick out the 'white' eggs.

I think all eggs would probaly go white together if they where infertile, not sure though.

The brown ones should hatch, the white ones are infertile. New parents don't always pick out white eggs but once they gain experience they should start removing them.

thats what i am hoping Rob, they also scattered the eggs all over the pot, indicating they are new to this breeding game LOL

I am hoping Kell above is correct, in that wouldnt we expect them ALL to be white if it was a bad batch?

I hope so Ed, i want to put these two in their own set-up, they are beauties

Its just i never seen a batch with so many infertile eggs, and the previous owner said they laid eggs a few times but nothing came of it, although saying that, his tank was packed, this set-up is a lot more suited to their breeding
