The thread started the other day regarding battery backup - got me thinking. The longest power cut that we have had around here is about 4 hours, so battery backup would be ok for me as opposed to a genny. Where do you get them from? Thought i'd try a Telboy - "anyone got a cheap/free one" ? ( if not where can I get one?) |

dunno - thought you could get a battery backup with steve asking - maybe u can't then, and it would have to be a genny? |

I dont see batteries working, all electrical equipment for fish tanks appears to operate at 240v AC, batteries are DC. You would have to buy/create,(or tel scrounge) all new equipment.
Uless somebody does produce low voltage DC equipment. |

What about heaters? And if you have a marine set up with a skimmer. I would hate to think how much room would be required for the batteries to keep a system running for an extended period of time. Cos they aint gonna be PP7's.

Buy a PC UPS from a PC shop / ebay.
A ups is basically a battey backup for your PC. |

why dont you consider an invertor (the kind you use to run stuff in your car) a large leisure battery well charged and a 600w invertor will keep pumps and filters running for ages, maybe not heaters but it takes a very long time to cool most tanks to dangerous levels? but you would have to be there when the power cuts??? |

I have a nice genny sitting in the shed for just such an occasion.
The battery that someone was on about would be an inverter of the type used for caravans some people have reported problems with impellors when using these as the hertz rating is different but I'm no electrician so its all a foreign language to me might as well be speaking German.
One thing to watch out for though is the total wattage of your set up make sure what ever you are using can handle it.
900 watts is sufficient for my 3 tanks even with the 2 metal halides on. |
