Bubble wrap is the cheapest, cover the pond with it, not the fish! |

if you gonna follw Elmo advice, be sure to use a latex body suit, or you'll wipe the body slime off the fish, i got all over latex body suit, Perky has it, but when he's finished with it, its your mate |

paul ive took a 300 watt heater and left it in my pond for 2 years now and the fish keep in the vicinity where it is warm and had no problems up to now the heater is just there to keep it from freezing up. |

You can use a heater in line with the filter or simply put one in, but with a koi pond I doubt a tank heater would have much affect. Bubble wrap is good, but even better would be to built a frame for over the top of the pond and get some white fabric from a garden cantre, I can't remember the name but it's used to keep plants warm over the winter. |

Rob-C its called fleece. Although I've no idea on keeping koi I leave my normal pump running all year round. The heat from this keeps a small area free of any ice, and my fish (orfe) seem happy. |

Cheers Dave.
As people have already said the pump should provide enough moving to prevent the water freezing over. It is good for fish to have a winter, I remember reading it in a Koi magazine. Basically it gives them a period of rest. |

Dont matter if it does freeze over just put some tennis balls in the pond that will do the job. |

First off keep the surface of the water agitated moving water freezes at a lower temperature than still water. Using an airstone is good for this.
As far as keeping it warm bubble wrap and the like is help ful but I would suggest using a heater if you are really concerned. |

You don't put it ON the water surface, you cover the pond with it you donut! |

If you have the money a poly-tunnel is the way to go.
Huge air space above the pond keeps the chill off the fish. You can just use the clear sheeting stretched across, it is UV permeable for plants.
