I have just changed my filteration to the berlin system using filter wool to pull out any materials to save the live rock doing most of the work ... i changed my filteration aboutr 2 weeks ago and have been changin the wool every1-2 days .. my question is when can i have an anemone i understand that nitrate must be low if not 0 same with phostphate.. i tested my water after the filtration change and had a slight spike which was expected... but now i have tested and it is coming back as fine with nitrate and phostphate. i have my metal halides on for 12 hours which i have been told is too long .. could this be the reason for brown algea building up .. my lps said my water was fine when they tested it .. the reason i think it is the lights is because i left them off all day yestuday and night and this morning i could not see any brown ?

i just need to no if i have a very close 0 reading on both and im gettin Brown algea caused by to much light does this mean it will kill my anemone ?

Your NO4 needs to be 0 as for the NO3 it needs to be as low as poss, been as though you have just changed the filtration i would leave it for a while for the live rock to kick in, what circulation do you have in the tank, ie power heads LPH, and what size tank in litters is it? how muck LR have you got and do you have a sump, sorry for all the Q but if you give us an idea we may be able to help, also what is your stock at the mo.

flow is well over is around 80000-10000lph -- the tank is 350l in size and is the trigon 350 .. live rock 60kg

Well all seems fine, just let the LR settle in to its new job, and keep changing that floss for a small while, then leave the floss out, and your LR will thrive aswell as the tank

oh right i herd on another forum that by keeping the floss in and changing it weekly for the rest of your marine expericen is beeter as it totally save the rock doing any of the work because you remove it before it gets to the rock

Just worked out your flow , i would increase it a bit more at 10000lph you only have 28 times turn over an hour, i would be looking at around 40 in a berlin system.

Your LR is the filter in a berlin , if you filter out every thing what is the bacteria going to live on

my external filter has live rock in with a layer of filter wool so which catches waaste and larger particals .. once a week i take it out and replace it .. www.marinefishfourm.co.uk.. many people are doing this with sucess

Tom the live rock needs light to work otherwise you will be pumping dead organisms back into your tank, the only time live rock needs no light is when it is curing ie all the organic matter gets skimmed off then into some decent lighting and it will spring into life.Light is life tom for the marine world without it you have dead rock doing nothing.

yep thats what i use live rock rubble with 60kg in the tank and filter wool right at the top on the external filter which i chnge on a regualar basis .. and i have to say my tank has improved !!! before i had issuses with nitrate but now its not so intence just have the nitrate left over from the change over .. no sponges anymore inb my external .. just lr rows and wool !

Tel ive been told by Barry at the goldfish bowl that the TMC V2 skimmers are good and they are cheap . a 1600 thats the biggest one' can skim up to 350 gallon aquaria . if you get them from swell uk they are about £160. obviously the smaller ones are cheaper
