Opinions on cracked tank |

I have a 7x2.5x2 tank that is double based. whilst putting it in the house we dropped it on the step in the doorway and cracked the outer base . i tried it with some water and there are no leaks the inner base is 6mm glass and thoroughly sealed with silicone. i am getting different opinions on wether to carry on with the project or to scrap the tank so i would like to hold a ballott to see what everybody thinks and get some general advice on the best course of action .

id clean the base of tank, sillicone the base + add another layer of glass maybe 6mm,once set,id make sure it was perfectly level + sitting on at least 1" polly |

Cheers Tel. Do i need to use a specific type of glass or would any glazer stock it? |

i would agree with telboy,as for the glass i would use toughend, you would have to give a glazier the exact size piece of glass asked for it be toughend it will be sent off heat treated and blasted with cold air as it comes out the furnace to toughen it apparantly may be wrong, toughend glass carnt be cut as its the type of glass that just shaters so it will have to be spot on with the measurements best of luck and allow a bit of clearence |

MMMMMMMMM thats size glass aint gonna be cheap is it? perhaps if i explain the crack a bit better it might help. as the tank landed on the corner it cracked about 6 inches along the side the crack runs about 2 ft and joins the front pain of glass . there are also smaller cracks where it landed , i think its knackered |

ste if ya thinking of dumping the tank, why not try just sillicone the cracks + set it on some ply, then rest it flat on polly sheet, after a couple days half fill, leave for a couple days if no leaks then fill to top leave for a few more days if it leaks it leaks |

dont use toughened glass for an aquarium, if you bump a standard tank it will leak once cracked but silicon holds it if you bump a toughened glas sheet it simply explodes (lethal weapon 2 style)if you like the tank put it on softish poly on an old piece of kitchen worktop on your patio and fill it up if it holds ,magic if not??? or you could just buy a complete new 12mm base for it you may be surprised how cheap this stuff can be and silicon will only be a fiver, how much would a new one be??????
oh by the way ,is it actually double based (a complete waste of time) or is it laminated glass i.e two sheets of glass with a thin plastic sheet bonded between them like a car windscreen. best of luck |

Its double based big cats . it has a peice of 6mm glass siliconed inside it . it is a really well made tank . i have just cut the trim away around the cracked area and to be honest there is so much silicone holding the top base in i dont think it will leak in a month of sundays . |

We've exactly the same problem with an 8x2x2 and exactly the same happened when we were moving it - we'd collected it, driven over 100 miles home then it slipped as we were placing it down in the back garden. |

As big cats says dont use toughened glass!!!!
Use plate glass.
If you crack the tank, you want a big crack, not shatterting into millions of pieces.

The only way it can go is downwards . and the crack is only appx 2.5% of the area . what is the difference between standing on a piece of MDF on top of the polystyrene or standing it on a piece of glass on top of the styrene aprt from the fact that the glass will be siliconed to the broken base and the MDF wont?
The stand i am making is going to support 100% of the base of the tank that way there will be nowhere for it to move to . it wont be able to sag downwards . and the only way the front or side could let go would be if the silicone holding the inner base or the outer base failed which is very unlikely to happen if it did it wouldnt be caused by the crack it would purely be bad silicone. |

Could you not do what you say, silicone a piece of glass on the base, and also to get a piece that snugly fits in to the bottom of the tank and silicone that in?
Alternatively, just the piece inside siliconed inside and the wood underneath to support? |

Its already like that Nick all i have to do is stand it on some wood.
Tho i have just been informed that after 6 months the glass will bow upwards ????????????? |
