Thermometer Broke - Mercury?? |

Dear all
I went to feed my fish this morning to discover that the bottom of the thermometer (the pointy end) had broken off (my goldfish are a bit boisterous) and there were lots of tiny silver balls at the bottom of my tank.I tried to scoop them up in a net, and think I managed to get most of them although I'm sure there will still be some lurking in amongst the stones. Now that I've looked on a few websites (while at work) I'm really worried about mercury poisoning. I don't know if these little balls are mercury? or if they will be enough to poison my fish. (180 litre tank) I'm not at home at the moment, but if the fish are ok when I get home, should I change all of the water or what do you recommend? Thanks for you help |

In case anyone needs to know for future reference! I have managed to find out from Hagen's website (the makers of the thermometer) that the little silver balls are actually made of a lead alloy. There is no mercury in the thermometer, but I'd still need to ensure I remove the little silver balls as the lead can be harmful if swallowed by the fish. |
