It certainly looks like a mozambique tilapia and from the colouration I would say it is a male.

The thing is with these fish is that they are commercially bred as a food fish and certain strains have been created to give a different coloured flesh which is more attractive to the food market next time your in Tescos have a look for Red tilapia this is a man made hybrid which may have some mozzy in it.

The one you have though appears to have the natural colouration.

They are not very common in the hobby because not many people want to keep them which is unfortunate because aside from size they make a very good aquarium fish they a virtually indestructable for a start. I believe a study found they can tolerate salt water up to a concentration of 49 ppt natural sea water is 35 ppt so this is one tough fish they will even bred succesfully in such water.

They are also relatively placid for a cichlid making them a viable subject for a mixed medium sized fish community tank.

I keep mine with 10 Congo tetras 1 Heros notatus 3 distichodus affinis numerous synos 2 garra and a few other catfish with absolutely no aggression problems.

If it is a mozzy the latin name is Oreochromis mossambicus having said that the natural colouration of Oreochromis aureus is similar and certainly from the picture you have taken it could be either fish is it possible to post a picture of the whole fish.

I am particularly interested in the tail shape as this may help distinguish from the two possibles if getting the whole fish is difficult.

i have been fortunate enough to gain access to stirling university dept. of aquaculture,where they had, as part of an international programme ,been breeding these fish when i kept fish ten years ago they were so readily available you tripped over them on the way into lfs looks like a wild strain wild specimans are rare these days commercially reared have smaller lips usuallly and are dull by comparison

Ive taken a better piccy of him here;

Now i know what strain he is i can try and get another 2 of them.
Yes i would say hes a male ast the place i brought him said there was 2 and they were always fighting.

Its great to know a little more about him.
Hes very placid and spends most of the day shovling up gravel for food i guess..

Definately a mozzy and as I said a great aquarium fish if they didn't get so big.

Have a serious think about adding females though as they breed like rabbits, I suspect this is one of the reasons they are good for aquaculture. They also can get quite aggressive when breeding they can be very territorial then, although as you have found when not breeding they are perfect gentleman.

Even if they want to do damage to other fish they normally can't because their big rubbery lips are pretty harmless they will rip plants to shreds though. When scrapping with other fish they generally ram them into the side of tanks or into the bottom or into decor most robust fish barely notice them. Even other cichlids will often ignore them they don't seem to recognise them as cichlids which is odd I keep mine with a very territorial Heros notatus and he just ignores him.
