Like most home contents insurance, mine doesnt cover anything to do with my fish tanks.
There must be some insurance out there that does this. I am referring to breakages, damaged caused by a burgular or just bad luck with heaters and filters.
I've got x4 set-up's and i would put a value of about £1000 each if i had to replace everything in the tank, including the tank itself. So thats about £4,000 in total (minimum)
Any idea?
You got anything useful Perky? |

I heard the premium for insuring an LFS guppy against any disease is £1000 per month

I found this out the hard way several years ago when 2 x 4ft trop tanks both burst one night.
Our insurance comp sed cos it wasn't a water storage system we weren't insured, BUT we argued and eventually they paid out for a new carpet (well part of the necessary ackers), but nowt else.
It's worth talking to insurance company's, but be prepared to argue your point. |

well i am going to find some insurance somewhere, i want to get it clear NOW and not have to argue the toss at the time, i would be willing to even pay something like £20 or £30 a month extra for some peice of mind. That kind of monthly premium should get me something.
I mean i pay £17 a month home contents and it covers me for £7500
I am looking for cover FOR the tanks, stock and equipment and NOT just for the water damage.
It might sound pessimistic, but i have finally got my tanks the way i want, and it's worth 4k or perhaps 5k really.

It should be fairly easy to get cover for breakages, water damage ect, But you won't be able to get cover for your livestock.
I know of a few the will cover everything else, I'll have a look for them in a bit |

Any decent insurance company should cover you for water damage if your tank decides to empty it's self all over your floor. We were lucky and ours also covered us for the internal filters that had run dry and also the light starters that were underneath and the tank it's self. Good idea to check with your insurance company if you are covered.

Okies, update
I spoke with my Home Contents Insurance provider (Tesco)
I am currently paying £17 per month for standard contents insurance (i think it covers up to £7,500)
They offer nothing to cover
(a) the fish
(b) damaged caused by water from the tank
BUT..... with "accidental damage" i will be covered for the cost of the tank and equipment if an "accident" happens, i.e. not "wear and tear"
I took them up on this
The extra £££ per year is £72.45 which works out at £6.04 per month
It also means every other item in my flat is covered for acciental damage, including my PC and lap-top etc..... so i cant argue with £6 per month!!!!
I am still going to pursue insurance for damaged CAUSED by the tank and also insurance for the cost of my FISH.
I am particularly keen to get the fish insured, i dont know if any of you have thought of this?
This is the LFS cost price of the fish in each of my tanks (approx)
Tank 1 £250
Tank 2 £200
Tank 3 £300 (Malawi)
Tank 4 £400 (Planted Community)
Plants in Tank 4 £200
So plants and fish in all x4 tanks...... approx £1350
They are sending my the policy in writing, i can cancel within 14 days if i am not happy.
And in any event i can cancel with a months notice.
I am now going to try a few other companies to see if i can cover myself for each tank COMPLETELY
