Hi
Someone at work has asked me a question about his goldfish, I dont know the first thing about them so can any of you help.

Can any of you offer any advice or tell me what to ask him - i think its just in a fish bowl.

______________

How are you?
Matthew, our one and only goldfish is losing weight/not eating the 'Goldfish' food [the cheapo little tub that you get from pet shops]

How do I know that he is losing weight? He used to be very muscular/wiggly when I change the water. But these days he is very lightweight/limp little thing.

How can I improve his life and bring happiness to our household?

Thank you ever so much.

I would tell them that not many living things can take constant physical abuse

fish bowl probably says it all, a tank upgrade with a filter will always be better than a bowl, alternatively, tell him to put it in a pond, i personally wouldn't ever put a goldfish in a tank long term if they can live fine in a pond

Can he get the water tested at the lfs for ammonia and nitrite?

Possibly get someone from the lfs to do a skin scraping?

Or can Mwilde give him some mature gravel and tank water to help condition the water.

I wouldnt feed at all over the next week, if anything get some live food, (not brineshrimp or saltwater live food)only freshwater foods.

The goldfish definitely needs a tank with filter.

The food may also be part of the problem. Using a good quality food really does make a difference. I feed mine on TetraFin Gold Exotic and for the big ones TetraFin Sticks. They are big and in great condition, despite being overcrowded because I have many rescued fish.

Even if one of them gets injured or sick, it usually recovers very fast. I can only guess this is because of the food.
