ive got an established breeding pair of Fossachromis Rostratus which have been together for some time. My male has now turned his attentions to a female Venestus, which has now in turn start to lay eggs. The male now chases the female rostratus constantly around the tank, is this normal practice?? Does anyone know what would be the best course of action??
its nothing out of the ordinary nick, youll find in mixed malawi tanks that just about anything will crossbreed, even with the same species in the same tank a venestus will crossbreed with a rostratus and vice versa, if youre wanting to prevent crossbreeeding, the only safe way to do so, is to have species only tanks....but if you want to minimise the chases of it happening in the tank their already in, your best would be to buy a few more females of both species and a male venestrus if you dont have one already(and have the room to house one along side your other fish) theirs not much point in removing the female venestus, as your male rostratus will more than likely just find another partner and crossbreed again
my view is one that prevents crossbreeding. already there are many types lost in the hobby due to in-breeding, plus many diluted species that people buy.
