I have just put some in my discus tank, as the pair have spawned again (3 weeks after their first spawn). I mixed it with warm water as it says, but it was REALLY dark. I tipped a small amount over the water surface, and it's turned the water really dark blue. I only tipped about a tenth of the dose that it says to use, because I didn't like the darkness of it. Does anyone use this to keep fungus away from the eggs? If I'd have used it all the fish wouldn't have been able to see!! I've never used it before (as you can probably tell). Maybe I added it too early, as the eggs have only been there a couple of hours - thoughts and/or advice please ......

the water will go dark depending on the size and volume of the tank, do a water change and it will help thin it out

But I calculated the required amount, so wether it be a 10 litre or a 500 litre tank, surely the water will be the same darkness??? As it happens, it's only a 70 litre tank, there's just the pair of them in it - obviously - and they're only a 5 inch or so pair, so not the biggest. Do you use or have you used this? Won't it disturb the eggs if I cahnge the water? Although, with it being only a 70 litre tank, I do change at least a third of it most days. I did intend doing a 50% water change tomorrow - would this be reccommended with eggs, or does it not matter?

CHANGE - I meant....

I would do a 30% water change daily.

Im not a big fan of MBlue, its really only for a dip treatment in the real world.

I think many fish breeders only use a few drops per gallon.

I wouldnt switch to anything else for this batch of eggs, the fish are stresed enough and chances are you have wiped out a lot of germinating fungal spores with the first dose.

Do things the organic way and place an airline close to the eggs. The turbulance prevents fungal spores from landing on the eggs. The spores need a settling time on the egg surface in order to germinate and produce active growth

This morning, the fish don't seem stressed at all surprisingly, even after a 50% water change. It has thinned down the blue, but still darkish. I won't be using it again I don't think. At least most of the eggs are still there. so fingers crossed! Next time, I'll try dropping the airline in near the cone, although there is some fine water movement around the cone with the air from the sponge filter. Thanks for your help.

If you put some carbon in your filter this will help remove the Meth Blue as well. Only time I use it with eggs is if I have to steal the eggs and there is some fungus present, other than that, I wouldn't use it. As D.R. says, airline helps to keep the fungus at bay.

No carbon - - using a sponge filter for the pair...thanks for your advice, will try the airstone method next time

Prob with meth is that it inhibits mucus production in the parents and you need to clear it out before fry are freeswimming. Much better to use a dose of King British anti finrot/fungus-works a treat without turning your tank a darker shade of blue. Meth is a nightmare to get out of spongefilters!!

Thanks for that - am gonna have to do another water change tomorrow - regardless of the eggs been there. Did one this morning and they didn't seem to mind....There's always next time anyway

Meth blue is pretty good at killing your filter too.

if you put a tiny bit in some water and drink it, no harm will come to you, but your urine will be bright blue

seriously

i read somewhere thats its on old party fo trick of medical students, honestly, apparently some kind of "joke" where they spike someone's drink, maybe a dark coloured drink like brandy, it only takes a bit to make the urine completely blue apparently

Telboy, when you popping over for that cup of tea?

Sorry troops, hate to be the party pooper but its not big and its not clever.

Yes Fry Lover is correct in saying its a prank within med student circles.

Yes some hilarious posts above...I know its all light hearted banter on here, tongue and cheek perhaps butpersonally I dont approve of the spiking of anyones drink, with any substance, whether fish related or not.

some health and safety data on MethB:

Stick to the dry ice trick in the cocktail glass, thats a much better one, your drink wont taste all that pleasant but at least you'll impress you fellow party goers
