i need some ideas people of what to keep in the 30 or so tanks ive purchased, the vast majarity of them are around 30gallons give or take abit, the fish im after mostly are fish i can breed( doesnt really matter if they are easy or difficult ) i am also planning on having a huge tank or two which will need filling, these tanks will literally be as big as i can find as ive never kept any tank busters before it would be nice to try and cover some of the costs through selling some fish aswell, so suggestions please people, please note this is not a deliberate business venture, just a hobby( an expensive one at that) |

Bristlenoses always fetch a fair price and shops always have a demand for them. I too have set up some tanks for breeding purposes and have opted for the following as they seem to have a demand (I happen to love them as well):
Endlers (no shops near to me stock them for some reason)
Betta Simplex
Fighters (not tried to breed as of yet)
Nigerian Red kribs
Egyptian Mouthbrooders
Galaxy rasporas
Thats me for starters

any cichlids i think they are always more interesting to keep and you do breed them you'll have no end of peolpe wanting them possibly with the exception of convicts |

endlers and egyptian mouthbrooders on the list, theres no endlers near me either nick! i cant understand why, there just as easy to breed as guppies apparentky, and how many guppies do you see |

Endlers do not simply die when you put them in your own tank within a week as well. Think they are such a great fish compared to the guppy you tend to see commonly now.
Had 2 male endlers and 4 females in my first breeding tank, there must be 100 fry now within a month
Cannot understand why Egyptians are so rare these days either (had a wanted add on for months), they are great but noone seem's to have any
Good luck with the breeding set ups Woz |

Hi Woz, if there are any fish you want cichlid wise and some catfish/plecs, try www.trimar.co.uk, usually have a good range of stock and deliver for a tenner |

£3 a day to heat the room
that sounds cheap to me, if you got x30 tanks
i am not saying its "nothing" its £90 per month at the end of the day, but with x30 tanks, it's gonna be like you just took out a £10,000 loan to buy a new car in terms of monthly costings! |

well thats just the heating, theres the airpumps to run aswell and god knows what thats going to cost, i know marks got a fish house and he said he pays about £2.50 a day for everything excluding food |

If they were my tanks i would be keeping at least 10 tanks free for fry . i made the mistake of filling all my tanks with fish of different cichlid species in the hope that some of them would breed after a couple of months , but what i didnt bargain for was the scale at which they did breed once they started . i had absolutely thousands of baby fish and was constantly moving fish around to accomadate the fry and pregnant mothers, at one point 12 of my 23 tanks were full of fry which i had to keep and feed up until they reached a saleable size of appx 1 inch, with some fish this can take months . It also became a full time job running along side my normal job. Then when it was time to sell the fry on, it was like trying to sell 2nd hand wall paper . and i never redeemed the money from electricity costs , foods, medicines , and equipment ,
i spose what im trying to say is please dont make the same mistakes i did and end up getting rid of the lot because it was costing hundreds of pounds to maintain and had damaged my interest in the hobby. Stick with what fish you already have and see how it pans out before you spend anymore money. |

good post Ste
not that Woz is banking on £££ or anything, but i think making ANY money from fish keeping is a BONUS and cannot be expected.
Dont factor in "sales" in your budget. Its not worth it, so unpredictable.
Just assume you gonna make NOTHING, and enjoy the hobby for what it is, without the extra stress of trying to recoup money through selling fry

Ah Men to that. Totally agree with Lex and Ste. Absolute bonus when any fry sell though. |
