my discus are breeding every week but after 3 days they turn white 1 by 1 i take it these are unfertile but does this mean my fish will never get it right, i am almost 100 percent sure i got male and female and his tube is different to hers and he is bigger and his fins are pointed were hers are rounded, will they ever get it right? |

In most cases they eventually get it right, it may take a while but it'll be worth it.
How old are they? |

what is the hardness and PH levels in your tank,if the water is hard sperm cannot enter the eggs to fertilise them. |

|
ray is spot on ,you can keep tank bred discus in all sorts of water as long as its clean but osmosis prevents sperm from entering the egg in hard or even slightly hard water and they all die |

and before anyone corrects me i know that my answer is a very simplified description of the actual process |

my ph is 6.5 and my water hardness is low in my area, i am goin to let them keep trying till i get my ro or hma filter and see if that makes a difference |

if your water is soft then you should not need an ro set up,they have already spawned dont muck around with them it will be a question of time |

Sound advice, and Tasha Your not old enough to know about the birds and bee's first hand |

legally she is i think Nick
Interesting about RO and the need for it if you already got tap water that suits discus?
Big Cats, i am not 100% sure, but if his pH is 6.5 he could still in theory have "slightly hard" water?
Would checking the actual hardness be the order of the day? |

Whats the ideal PH for discus Fry lover? |
14-11-2007 21:58 by Fry Lover
|
i never kept them and am FAR from a discus expert, but its my understanding most peeps advocate a pH of between 5 and 6.5 for "ideal" conditions, especially if wanting to breed,
However, i do know, that pH STABILITY is absolutely key for these fish, so anyone who is messing with their pH and keeping discus, better get it right, so it doesnt go up and down all the time |

I eventually want a discus tank, but would want to get it right so that is one for the future for me at some point. They are stunning looking fish as my daughter loves them as well (my main bargaining and influencing strategy with the better half) |

yes fry lover ,it is possible to have sufficient hardness present with a 6.5 ph to prevent egg fertilisation and it needs to be checked (the water in my area is so soft that i have trouble keeping ph up so am looking at getting into discus BIG TIME), most discus need about 6.5 wild heckels though need a ph as low as 4 and at that level biological filtration stops working??? a trace of hardness can be removed using basic purifiers |
