which are easier to keep trops or coldwater fish and why |
17-11-2007 19:03 by Woz
|
depends what type of coldwater and what type of trops |
17-11-2007 19:11 by Linda Chenapa

You don't keep FISH, you keep WATER.
The larger the volume of water you can keep, the better, as it will be more forgiving if you do have a problem.
That said, cold water fish produce more waste than tropical, so realy I feel it is up to the individual. As long as the fish are kept correctly, ther should be no difference.

Its a long time since I kept either, but coldwater tend to be "dirtier" than trops, therefore need more filtration or cleaning.
Trop community tank can be very "pretty" and relaxing and there is always the possibilty that fish may breed, something that never happened in my coldwater tanks, only the pond.
Either requires commitment and care, both have advantages and disadvantages. Like many things you pays yer money yer make yer choice. |

i personally wouldnt ever keep coldwater fish anymore, if i have a tank spare its easy enough to put a heater in it and have a tropical tank instead of coldwater, coldwater fish just dont do anything for me in tanks, ive got a pond for them where there much better off |

i am not convinced about "you dont keep fish you keep water"
because you have to consider how fish behave with each other (aggro) and also the feeding routine.
You "keep" fish AND water
But we "keep" water more than we realise.
In answer to the question
Coldwater

why cold lex |

i take it this is on behalf of TONK rob? i dont get the keep water thing,if that was the case why filters etc, a bucket in the garden would do eh?i think theyre as easy/hard as each other, most folk when talking of coldwater fish mean goldfish/fancies! but look around theres 100s of diff coldwater fish, fresh + marine, and as for coldies making more mess, anyone seen a pihrana eating or even oscars + other big cichlids...like ive said both as easy/hard as each other, make ya choice + do the best ya can for the fish |
17-11-2007 20:04 by Linda Chenapa
|
tel - if you don't keep the water right then you can't keep fish in it. It doesn't matter what the feeding habits are or how the fish behave if the water isn't right. |
17-11-2007 20:07 by big cats

the ability to keep water correctly is no guarantee of your ability to keep fish, i agree it is essential however there is more to keeping fish than water, there is more to keeping a dog than feeding it??? |
17-11-2007 20:22 by Fry Lover
|
true Linda, but we keep fish AND water, and to say we dont keep fish, we keep water is in correct in my humble opinion, but i know where your coming from
So if our water quality is perfect we can keep a Male Siamese Fighter with a group of tiger barbs can we?
If our water is perfect we can feed Mbuna Malawi blood worm?
Think Not |
17-11-2007 20:27 by Fry Lover
|
to get to the point again
We keep BOTH fish and water
Case Closed, Telboy agree's dont you?
and Big Cats? |

Vodka but only had a tiny bit, gonna watch Fantastic Four, Rise of the Silver Surfer on DVD with my boy. |

Case not yet closed
Only an idiot would keep a Male Siamese Fighter with a group of tiger barbs!
First and foremost we keep water then we keep and care (hopefully correctly) fish.

You are both right and you have both agreed with each other. Water is importand as well as the actual fish that you are keeping. So is the food, lighting for the plants (if kept), and the list is quite exhaustive if you really go in to it.
But in essence, you are both right

hi there all, i have only ever kept coldwater fish, both comets and fancys, and boy they really do make lots of mess you do need massive filtration and spot on water. but i think that is the same for any fish, people are always telling me that tropical fish are easier, i shall soon find out im sure. |

surely, cold water fish are far more varied and interesting than the variations on the goldfish. Having said that, anybody who keeps goldfish well (and I don't mean simply keeping them alive) should be able to keep anything. |

what kind of other coldwater community fish can i add safely with these fish
my tank is 5 foot long 3 foot deep and 3 foot wide holds about 1276 litres
and help
thank you |

the fish you have mentioned apart from the minnows are all goldfish they are just different varieties. the moors and the fancies are fan tails and the goldfish are comets and along with the shubunkins are single tail. because you have quite a large tank they should be ok together just keep an eye at feeding time and make sure the fan tails are getting food. and that the goldfish are not hasseling them. also what size fish are they? if the comets are quite large they might see the minnows as food! i would not get any more fish than you have the goldfish can grow to 12" plus and the fan tails to 8" plus. what type of filter do you have? goldfish do produce massive amounts of waste and do need lots of filtering. |
18-11-2007 13:32 by Big Rob

fan tails n oranda n ryukin r slower moving thats why u make sure theyre eating |

they all seems to be feeding ok and getting on ok they have been in the tank together now for about five days so the goldfish (which are about 3 inches)are ok with the moors and fancies but you think they will eat the minnows the fitler stytem is in the tank at the side it is in a separate compartment it is three glass compartments that suck the watse through then it goes into another compartment that has lots of sponges and a brick then two pumps this tank before me was used for marine fish so i am hopeing to change the filter sytetem update it to a new one does anyone know a good fitler for me to buy
is it ok to put catfish in
thank you for your help |

Hi tonk, what kind of catfish do you mean? Small corys, small plecos and similar are a very bad idea, because the goldfish may try to eat them and the spines stick in the goldfish's mouth, sometimes causing the death of both fish. |
18-11-2007 17:52 by Big Rob
