Mixing Fish |

What are the risks of mixing goldfish and tropical fish?
A friend of mine has told me that you can run your tank at 23/24 degrees, thus allowing goldfish and tropical fish to live together. She says this can only be done if you have a heater and gradually build the temperature up.
Does anyone have any more information on this? |

not worth the aggro, just decide what you want, tropical or coldwater, honestly thats the best way to go, and not all tropical fish are happy at 23/24 anyway
Basically, what you will be doing Kimmyjane, is increasing the risk of disease in the long term if the fish are not kept in their proper environment.
Goldfish can "live" at a constant 23/24 yes, but they "thrive" at cooler temps, which they will get in the autumn, winter and most of spring in an unheated home tank in UK
Dont do it, thats my view, although it will depend on TYPE of fish,
what fish have you got in mind? |

Thanks for the quick response.
I've currently got a comet a common gold fish and 2 bristol goldfish (long flowing tails). I also have a plec and a snail. Used to have some minows, but they have now all died (3 years old).
I've been offered 2 kribs, 5 penguin tetras, 5 silver-tip tetras, 3 black neon tetras and a rosy barb.
I've currently got a 3ft tank running naturally at 23, dropping to 20 over night.
Quite heavily planted one end and slightly more open at the other. |

in this weather how do you maintain that temp naturally, you must use a lot fo central heating
The Goldfish may eat or attempt to eat the tetra's at some point, escpecially the black neons. I have never kept goldfish funnily enough, but i hear countless stories of them eating smaller fish
If your kirbs are male and female and they breed, you could have issues with agression.
Some barbs are notorious fin nippers, not sure about Rosy Barb, dont think they are too bad, but you better check or your goldfish will soon be getting a hair cut if not careful!
I know its tempting KimmyJane, but if you;ve got 3 goldfish and a pleco in a 3 foot, you really havent got room for all this tropical, you might think you have by looking at the tank, but goldfish need more space and water than most fish if you gonna keep them healthy
Temp wise you might be okay at 23/24 with the trops
Also, sorry to be so pessimistic, but if you do go ahead, whatever you do DONT add all these tropical fish at once, you will perhaps ruin your whole tank, the increased fish will be need to be added gradually to allow the filter to cope.
I wouldnt do it to be honest, but can see the temptation, in theory it might be possible to get away with it for a while, but sooner or later you will have issues i am sure, you would need to set the heater to about 24C in my opinion.
I dont think a 3 foot tank can safely stock all the fish mentioned
What? |

I jut wouldn't. Its not fair on the fish to keep them at conditions theyre not meant to be at. Plus that kind of mix looks awful, IMO. |

At tropical temperatures goldfish will produce a lot of waste and use a lot of oxygen, causing water quality problems. They will also eat small fish. I think it would be better to just keep the goldfish and not accept the tropicals, or have two separate tanks.

Thanks all for you help and replies.
Have decided against the mixed tank for now, but looking at the posibility of running a second tank with the trops.
The two Kribs are both male and seem to be happy living together, so fingers crossed they will leave the other fish alone. As for the Barb, he seems to be OK with the other fish, so hope none of them will end up without tails etc...
Will keep you posted. |
