Posted Teacup rays size tank?

what would you all say is the minimum size tank for one teacup ray, and then the minimum for two?

(No, I'm not getting teacups rays, I would rather spend the time doing that 8 footer for a motoro than teacups )

But I have always wondered, as they are the smallest (and hardy ones) of the rays you can get in captivity so I believe.

Teacup ray is the name used for any small ray that cannot easily be identified within the trade, it normally means reticulata or histrix both can attain a disc size of 18" or so, so they may be smaller than motoro but they are still big fish.

The hardiest ray is generally thought to be the motoro hence its relatively easy availability.

Smallest tank for a single or 2 teacup rays would have a base of 4'x 2' with very little decor.

It might be worth looking for scobina as I believe these little rays top out at about 12" in disc size and are very hardy these will be hard to get though.

One other thing to note is I have heard of castexi being sold as teacup rays and these are not small rays I believe they get as big if not bigger than motoro.

Personally I prefer the retics and histrix to motoro as they are less aggressive towards other fish you could keep a pair of motoros in an 8 footer but a group of retics in an 8 footer would be more impressive.

Don't forget to max the width of the tank (front to back) minimum should be 2 foot and this is really to small for a motoro as they will attain 2 foot relatively easily.

was telling a mate about the ray i used to have, and she just asked if those 'teacup' rays could be kept in a 5x2x2 (2 max of them).

How big would the histrix need for one and a pair?

Thanks for the info. Motoros are my fave by far LOL.

Hystrix would be best and a pair would be fine in a 5x2x2. Its just finding them and beware rays are often marked up wrong and there are soo many variants its unreal. Ive got a female retic which is growing like a weed and I reckon it'll excedd 18" disc.

Hystrix shouldnt reach 18" but with rays anything is possible. I know of a 32" disc motoro-imagine that!!

So personnly I think 6x2 is min for pair of retics but it all depends on how big they actually grow. There are actually some geniune Dwarf retics doing the rounds (wharf may have some). Maybe your mate could look it them.

The below ray was sold to me by maidenhead aquatics as a hystrix and it doesnt look anything like one. It is infact a yepezi which is a motoro variant so im expecting motoro size but who knows...?

Hope this helps

thanks jake. i never knew you could keep rays in a 5x2x2 lol. shes kinda not savvy on them and places stocking them, so i doubt she would be able to tell the difference, know any good importers/suppliers?

Thanks alot for all your help

Tropical imports, is the best place and is mail order. Google them for stocklist but they dont have much suitable.

Im not recommended it but if max out small then it'll be ok. Dwarf retics would be the best bet as there prob only reach a foot disc. Bigger is always better

Stop calling them teacups, a small tiger ray could be a teacup but will grow to 30"-40". Teacup is just used to discribe baby stingrays.
