hi all, i have a rio 240 and its currently running a small community, i'd like to turn it into a malawi tank. it currently runs the standard juwel filter system but im going to upgrade this with an eheim 2028 with a uv unit. will standard t8 lighting be ok? also im going to use sand and ocean rock as substrate and decor. roughly how many malawi's can be kept within this tank, i know they like to be crowded but im unsure on the biological strain they will put on the system. tia trevor

they dont necessarily need to be crowded, it depends on the species, its a myth that they "need" to be over stocked as a general rule.

Yes, to normal t8 lights

have you any idea of the types of Malawi you are interested in?

Good choice with the eheim 2028 for that tank.

Keith T is the man for Malawi on this forum, from what i have seen from posts, but also Woz i believe.

Off the top of my head for a 240L with that filtration?

Something like 60" of fish all depends.....

ive not really looked into the species yet, i'd like to keep yellow labs, and anything that is not too aggressive. i need to get a book to look up the different species of malawi's. thanks for your help

the yellow lab (Labidochromis caeruleus ) is a good start its compatible with most malawis and the males usually only fight amongst there own.
A 4ft tank is the minumum as a general rule of thumb.

Heres some pics of mine

The 2nd and 3rd shot are tanks for fry but at the moment there is some crabros and a male lombardoi kenyi that are housed and due to go due to aggression.
