CYCLING TANK FOR STINGRAYS |

So, have my mate here, decided to go down the route of rays. 5x2x2 for 145 (i think?) on here, shes thinking of going with that and just buying a cabinet at LFS.
Cycling?
I've been away from the fish for a while, and my tank was already cycled cause i had fish in tank before my rays came
and ive never really known how to do it from scratch properly (especially seeing as rays will be the first in there) so I'm not the best to advise her.
Foolproof way anyone?
Thanks in advance |

Put other fish in first like goldfish or oscars for a few weeks. Have known people to pee in there tanks, this works really well...
Are you gonna be able to find any ture hystrix? |

shes gonna try who you said to try, if they turn out to be different she will have to uprade or sell, but hopefully shouldn't come to that if she gets the proper ones. How much they go for?
What to do with the oscars and goldfish after cycling? |

best thing to do it get her to go to her lfs and get a big bag of shite from some of their tanks, just tip it in your tank with just the filter running, should speed things up and saves you putting fish in straightaway, siphon off any *** the filter doesnt pick up |

what about diseases? |
21-11-2007 19:35 by Woz
|
just get it from a healthy tank, you shouldnt have any problems, ive always done it. |
21-11-2007 20:06 by Jessica
|
with rays ?
fair enough but fish can carry disease without symptoms cant they?
just she will have to be careful, rays are alot of money |

never with rays, but if you think about it, your either going to have to do what i said or put fish in which can carry disease, theres always a risk i suppose? |

how much water would you need to add to a 5x2x2 (new filters etc..no sump...niether of us can work out how to do it..) and then do what? |

Just give to fish away. Could always get water from another aquarist/ LFS, but I think it'll need a steady run of ammonia to do it properly, ie other messy fish is the only way. Add them and slowly increase the food over a period of weeks. Until you are feeding them 2-3 times a day to load the biologcal media to the max.
Test the water, only for ammonia and nirite, dont worry at all about nitrate or pH yet.
Only thing is, you'll have to put rays in just as you take starter fish out due to the fact that if you didnt have anything in there for couple days plus, the bacteria will die off causing big stress for the rays.
Ive never seen hystrix for sale, ring danny at trop imports (07789 110794) and ask about the other species as some of them maybe small.
You could just feed the starter fish to you snakes or dog. |

fish turn their nose up to them
mind you my allie got to a dead fish i discovered in the morning that had jumped out the tank quicker than I did |

In terms of the original title of thread, i always fishless cycle with Prawns. I can send you some really good links on this.
No need to use fish, especially cheap fish that might get diseased in that ammonia and nitrite environment, and then create issues in the tank |

I was at Wharf on Tuesday and I have a pair of the Dwarf retics. This caused a lot of problems on another forum but I am now thinking they might be dwarf like Wharf. Wharf had 2 females in on tuesday and both of them have recently given birth to still born pups since capture - most likely due to the stress of capture. I have seen one of the pups that Richard had kept in the freezer. This said the rays are about 5" disc at the moment and are obviously sexually mature at this size. I previously had 2 normal retics and I have to say these are stunning. They are active and have a lovely red colouring. If you want any more info or pics Pm me.
With regard to cycling try squeezing sponges from another tank. |

your friend doesnt know how to cycle a tank yet is considering something like rays? maybe some extra experience with something simpler would be a good idea? you can buy stuff now to cycle a tank in 24 hours, speak to the guy who runs discus essentials advertised on here,he mentioned some stuff to me the other day, but i would mature a tank the old fashioned way |

Hi Tony
I saw the still born as well. Hoping mine will breed as they are bigger than the one in Wharf that had the still born pup. Fingers crossed. |
