Posted Neon Tetra Disease

anyone had it?

i removed x4 neons from my set-up about a week ago, some colour loss on body, when i saw the first one i thought it was fungus but upon closer look it was clearly not.

Did some research and was horrified to learn its virtually untreatable, despite Waterlife Protozin stating it treats it on their bottle.

Anyway i cancelled the ticket of x4 neons and a week later no issues.

Tank water params are pretty spot on and no other issues in tank

EXCEPT, i have added some protozin, not even full dose and lost x2 Corydoras and no other fish

I think the copper from the Protozin has killed x2 Corydoras?

Apparently Neon Tetra Disease is passed from fish eating dead infected fish. So i will removing any neon that displays colour and cancelling their ticket.

Have never encountered it in my tanks, it does occur from time to time in imported stocks, most Neons are wild caught by the million.

Can dig out some reference material if you are really interested.

Have used Prtotozin in the past for other protozoan diseases, Tetrahymena - Guppy disease.

Protozin needs to be used in water of a certain hardness.

Yeah the Corys are very sensitive to treatments

I would just leave the treatments until you are sure its NTD, or further mortalities happen in your tank

I've experienced it before its nasty and not limited to neons some other tetras will get it as well as some live bearers and it can also lead to secondary infection with fish tb it can be very nasty.

To treat it I used a strong antibacterial remedy that was a powder it completely destroys all bacteria in the tank this worked but it was hard going getting it sorted and I doubt the stuff is still available.

If I encountered it now I would treat it with esha 2000 and hope for the best but if you can isolate the infected fish and treat them seperately whilst still treating the main tank that should prevent spread in the main tank and will hopefully save the infected neons esha 2000 is very cheap too a 20 ml bottle is enough to treat a 220 gallon tank and is normally less than a fiver I think, be careful to follow the instructions to the letter and if you can do some water changes using rainwater so you dont have any dechlorinator in there as dechlorinators block the function of most remedies on the market and render most virtually useless.

i never knew about the impact of dechlorinators on meds Alan.

Yep they are just chelating agents

FL - am I corrct in saying you have numerous tanks (5?)

Can I ask how many quarantine tanks you have?

Yes i have x5, i have a few tanks i could use for quarenteen, but basically i havent purchased new fish in 3months now i think.

I was thinking about keeping the removed x4 Neons in a seperate tank and seeing what develops, but i decided i would not be keeping them anyway, so i saved their time and mine and destroyed them.

So far tank is fine, but i think NTD can remain "dormant" for a while?

Believe me when i tell you, water params are spot on in this set-up. I take pride in my water stats and maintenance.

I've heard about "false" NTD too?

To be honest, the x4 nenos i removed didnt look as bad as internet pics on NTD, basically my philosophy with my planted tank, is because it's highly stocked and took a lot of effort to get it looking and running the way it does, i generally remove and destroy sick fish, no treatment, no isolation. Thankfully this is a rare occurance. The only exception i would use is white spot which this tank hasnt had and fungus.

Yes I commend you on the presentation of the tanks.

Doesnt really matter about water conditions, if the disease is there it will run its course unless treated.

Plus NTD was a possiblility, you would need to have it confirmed. Then again it might have come and gone.

Best to have some sort of tank as a setup for quar or isolation

There has been a lot of NTD about lately, I have seen many people on another forum complaining about it.
