Posted Planted tank

Ok, so doing a nice planted tank for my mum, only 3 foot. Not bothering with CO2 and such, but need to know the kind of lighting that would be best, and what about plant food?

Gonna have a few airstones, and low surface movement.

Due to the lighting, would there be more algae, as I've never had problems with it before, and used an old UV which was about a year old.

Anything else I need to know would be great.

Gonna start cycling the tank today with prawns, and the gravel is soft medium and rounded. How much will I need at the bottom?

Any info would be appreciated, thanks

and put the lights on a £3-£4 plug in timer.......i would go with around 10 hours to start

also, is an undergravel filter thing needed with the plants?

dont use under gravel filters with plants, it can be done, but not worth the aggro and it may restrict what plants do well.

A CO2 unit is only about £15 and better than anything else. Lighting wise, power glo and a flora glo or gro lux

I've went for PowerGlo on my tank and I'll probablly add CO2. I'm getting fertilizer in a bag that apparently last 3 months. All you have to do with it is put it in a filter or some where in your tank.

at what stage in the cycle should the plants be added, does anyone know?
28-11-2007
23:45 by Fry Lover
theres no "should" its up to you

In theory they'll help the cycle, as they are natural filters.

also in theory they wont help the cycle, as they consume ammonia and reduce the filters work, you want the filter to work hard during a cycle

Either way, unless you PACK the tank with plants that flourish it wont make much if any difference

Be careful of adding them too early as the higher nitrates could cause them to be covered with algae during the cycling, despite the plants contributing to the filtration by absorbing nitrates etc

there not part of the cycle put it that way Jess

as in the plants are not part of the cycle
