just been looking at some discus ads and was quite surprised at pictures on an advert by a dealer named chens
http://www.aquarist-classifieds.co.uk/php/detail49_86394.php
am i wrong to think that physical handling of any fish is risky how can a so cold expert think it wise to man handle discus in this way, i have handked fish in the past but only if they are very ill and i have no alternative surely there was a better way to get his pictures than to handle fish, these are after all for sale does anyone agree

It looks to me as if he is unpacking them, this resonable as you do not put the packing water in your tanks and hands are better than nets to exchange fish from boxes to tanks,I have done this many times and not caused any damage to the fish.

Thanks for you input. For you kind info, I am not only a dealer, but a discus hobbist who keep around 80-100 personal fish.

These fish are sedated before they are sent to the UK and handling big fish after sedating them is not a problem. How do you think you take them out of the bags??? Use a net when your net does not fit in the size of the bags they are packed??? Maybe, since you seem to be an expert, would appreciate if you shed some light to it. Infact, you can do more harm to discus by using a net, specially wild discus.

I can understand your view if the fish were caught physically by hand in an aquarium, but this is not the case as you can see, these pics were taken when the fish were taken out from the bags.

On a different topic, as far as discus fish is concerned, they should not be physically handled especially when they are sick.

Maybe the next topic should be "handling huge pleco, a professional"

Dont worry, he seems to have a habbit of thinking most things that fellow aquarists do is wrong.

i am sure mr chen is not worried by my comments, and in fact has admirably explained the handling of these fish without any question and i am happy to say i have learned something today and wish mr chen not be offended ,i do wonder if all discus specialists handle fish this way? and my original comment was not one of absolute distain but one of question, i suggested it be risky and asked if it were wise ,this is a way of looking for answers not stating what he was doing was wrong, i wrongly assumed they were in that position for the pictures and had not realised they were in fact in the process of being unpacked. in response to your statement that you are not a dealer mr chen you import fish photograph them while unpacking them and advertise them for sale for a profit a short while later , who are you trying to persuade that you are not a dealer us or the tax man i am alittle confused about the pleco part though?? do you keep plecos too

Hi, Big cats, not offence taken and it is good to clarify if in doubt. But, if I was asking a question, the post would have been slightly a bit different. Anyway, not everyone is the same

I never said, I dont deal with discus. I have just mentioned, that I AM NOT ONLY A DEALER, BUT A DISCUS HOBBIST, whereby I clearly accept that I do sell fish for profit, but thats not the only reason I sell them. Well, there is always an advantage of keeping the best stock as your personal fish while you dont get the same privilege if you are buying them.

With regards to your question of whether this method of handling is adopted by other specialists, I can certainly vouch that all wild discus are definitely physically handled. Check the following link up http://www.amazon-exotic-import.de/ the company is considered as one of the leading wild fish supplier in Europe. You will find almost all wild discus pictures are taken similarly.

Also, I can definetely say all brazilian exporters do the same, though I would not recommend on piranahs.

About the Pleco is was just a joke as most pleco are photographed by holding them

I did have around 200 L46 and a few L236, but have stopped them as I am currently concentrating on stingrays and discus.

perhaps my first line was a little much but if the post does not look interesting people wont read it ,if no one reads it then i wont get an answer, i would like to see pictures of these wild specimens in a tank environment, could you add some to the advert

pic of the fish in tank environment added. Dont forget that they will be more colourful once they are more settled in to the surroundings.

They are very graceful fish while compared to the domestic bred, but strongly feel they are suited only for experienced discus hobbist, else the money is going to go down the drain.

Yes, I do some delivery trips towards chippenham and cardiff every now and then, but do charge for fuel cost as it is mostly special deliveries. Just yesterday, I had to delivery fish all the way to poole as the customer did not mind reimbursing my fuel cost. I should be making a delivery towards chippenham very soon.

Joining Discus forum is always a good idea for hobbist starting out with discus keeping. My personal advice is to always speak to a specialist as they have practical knowledge on these fish which is not often found on forums and books.

the myth that discus is hard to keep is wrong. Infact they are one of the easiest to keep as long as you know what is right and wrong. Most hobbist are not aware what is the right way to keep them. I am planning to write an article in layman terms and post it on my website as to the success for discus keeping. Will do something up sometime in the new year.

ok thanks for the fast reply.
i will be asking the wife for money this christmass fish money perhaps!

My nearest maidenhead aquatics have small fish from Vietnam but they carry a big price .....2.5 inch fish at around £20-£25 each.

the next fish i get will not be from a retail fish shop!.....it will be from a main distributer/importer/breeder like yourself.
