Herons |

Has anyone out there got a foolproof way of keeping herons off ponds?
One has just decided to be a permanent resident and won't leave, just flies up into a tree until I've gone back into the house.
I don't want nets or wires so are the plastic herons any good or the PIRs that spray water?
Any suggestions would be gratefully received before my fish are an early Chrristmas dinner
My heron just stands in a shallow part of the pond , the fish seem to keep to the deep parts but don't know if any have gone.
Going to get a drainage pipe for them to hide in from my pterodactyl who is becoming too confident and wise to be scared off! |

I believe they are protected mwilde!
i would use a slick wire on post's around the pond,no need for nets and there is always the electric fence?

Its illegal to shoot them without a licence mwilde.
Fish farmers shoot 100s every year along with king fishes.
Try a plasic heron but keep moving it around so it looks real. Or tie fishing line across where he lands so he'll bump into it and spook |

herons need to walk into the water, if you only have a low wall they can step over into the water or if you have a shalow area for them to them to land in . we have a raised wall and the shalowest area is 30" deep , we have herons in our area as there is a lot of lakes local to us,but they dont give us any trouble. our local fishery owner tols us not to use a plastic herons as if they see one then they know there is food for them and will come down and feed.
there is a unit that when it detects something it shoots a jet of water at cats and herons , i havent used it but i am told that it is effective. |

Be wary of the plastic herons, a neighbour tried one, the local heron tried to mate it! |

Device that sprays water sounds like the best bet |

I had some pigeons in the loft the other day so i went on utube typed in birds of prey and had some type of hawk screeching so i put a speaker up there put the volume up and the pigeons scappered rapidly so i know somewhere down that line will deff work. |

The only fool proof way of of protecting a pond from herons is a netting across the top.
As far as fencing goes I do not think it will work the heron already has the measure of the ponds depth so will be happy to land straight into the water. Contrary to popular belief they do not have to land on land before walking into water. |

i believe they can land in shalow water. hoe about a pergola over the top to the pond ? the legs should stop the heron landing in the pond , the top can be used to shade the pond thus reducing alge and blanket weed . just a thought. |
