Well, thanks guys for all the helpful comments, the shotgun sounds the most positive but I' m getting quite attached to it now!
It's a really beautiful bird and unfortunately it's getting used to me now. Saw it a few minutes ago and it's practically pitch black outside.
Yes, I agree the net is the only sure way .
The pergola sounds very nice but as the pond is 55feet x 35feet can't really afford it.
I think it does land directly into the shallow end so wire probably won't stop it.
That leaves the water spray which I think I will try. The loudspeaker idea sounds good but couldn't have that blasting out all day.
The fish all seem to be still there , they've gone down deep now it's colder but it's probably getting things lined up for next year! And the noise it makes sounds quite prehistoric, a very harsh croaking.
A friend of mine has a pond with Koi and sturgeon. This is covered by a carport type roof and herons stand underneath it.
He has lost fish to them. Very hard to put them off.
Think the size of my pond may make it more difficult for the fish to be caught, not exactly "fish in a barrel"
Any further comments very welcome and it's nice to "get mail".

What about an electric fence around it.I`m sure i read somewhere that herons land on the ground then step into the water. |

No they do land in water as long as they can see the bottom of the pond/lake. How about just putting netting over the shallow bit?
Have you thought of getting a dog or a cat? |

Cats are putting our native birds under threat so please dont get one as there are far to many anyway. Prob wont be scared of it after while anyway.
Hide with a water pistol/ hose |

a friend of mine has a grid of fishing wire at about 10" squares over his pond. the herons really dont like it. Its suspended about a foot from the water and doesent detract from the look of the pond anywhere near as much as a net.

Jake with your behaviour with fish Oscars in particular (killing them so you can use them as fishing bait) I am surprised by your comments regarding cats!!! |

You just have to set up a parameter fence or fine wire around the pond.
Or drop the level so it is around 1 1/2 foot below the bank.
Commercial fish farmers place large screen nets the whole way across the ponds, lakes.
Sorry to say but its a protected bird, you cant touch them by law. |

Loan of an eagle owl, sure they will - not. Lovely birds, cost a bomb though.

What about the plastic herons with a broomstick up their bottom, they are supposed to work by showing passing herons that the pond is already occupied. |
