i just built a four tank four foot rack and i found it very tricky (and i thought my wood working skills to be fair ,your welding will need to be better than passable ? what are the exact dimensions of the tanks ,and where are you in the country? |

the joins are made using a circular saw ,mark all four legs top and bottom of each cross member , set your saws cut depth to the thickness of your wood , cut the top and bottom marks then run the saw as many time as you like between the cuts ,the remaining bits break off leaving the notch . or do top and bottom cuts then chisel the notch out ,water proof wood glue and some screws ,a sheet of ply screwed to the back to prevent flexing ,done?? took me five hours??

i screwed extra crossmembers on but dont think it needs em croos members are small cls from b&q £2 for eight foot length and the legs are big cls from same place £2.50 ish cost me £40 including the ply screws and glue i have enough smallcls left to get halfway to a three foot rack

Big Cats, C'mon tell the truth it was Bob the builder (top pic) who knocked up those tank stands.
Seriously, I had a similar system only mine was better
Good mortise and tenon joints, plus a cross member halfway across each 4ft support will strength it all up even more. |

edit:
cross member halfway across each 4ft support will strengthen it all up even more.

Plus, you might want to place a bracket on the top tier, just to stabilise it to the wall |

I had the same problem. I wanted racking that was strong enough to hold 4x 48"x18"x18" tanks.
You have the remember about the weight. A 48x18x18 tank is about 60 gallons. 60 gallons of water weighs about 275KG (calculation done on practicalfishkeeping.co.uk)
Most racking that you see holds 150kg per shelf. Its not enough.
I found some racking to hold 650kgs per shelf and it cost me £97. This is the URL

I have attached a picture of my setup. At the time of the picture only 2 shelfs were filled, but all 4 are filled now and I have no worries.
