I would say as in my own experience it is quite hard as the water volume is so low to keep one going in tip top shape. You will deff need live rock as the skimmers in these nano tanks are useless, try for a bigger tank and kick off with a pair of clowns or chromis and go from there.

If nano is your only option I would agree the Orca is definately the way to go as it also has built in fans for cooling.

Aside from the tank you will need the following equipment.

An RO unit or access to a supply of RO water if opting for a unit take a look at www.ro-man.com bear in mind the waste water I have just started collecting the waste water for use in water changes on my freshwater tanks as the prefilters remove chlorine chloramine pesticides etc so I no longer need to use dechlorinator I am actually quite horrified at the amount of waste water filling one bucket with RO water will fill 2 water butts with reject water. This is winter of course so the flow rate through the membrane is not so high.

You will also obviously need the salt I would suggest you go for reef crystals its cheap and buffer Alk and Calc very well.

You will also need a refractometer for accurately measuring the salinity of the water you mix go for an s.g. of 1.026 this is close to natural sea water levels and will maximise the calc and alk from the salt.

You need a means of boosting alk and calc I would opt for what is called the balling method on a nano this is normally in the form of 2 liquids that are dosed in equal parts to maintain the correct ratios of alk and calc.

2 identical buckets one for collecting ro water and mixing salt water the other for removing the waste water so you remove exactly the same amount of water as you add this helps maintain a stable salinity.

I would suggest you use a small power head for adding the new water to the tank to avoid disturbance to the system and control the rate of addition so the risk of osmotic shock is minimised.

Other things you will need:

A good book

Test kits for at least the following:

Alkalinity
Calcium
Nitrate
Phosphate
PH
Magnesium

and in the early days also test for the following:

ammonia
nitrite

You will also need a phosphate remover to filter over all the time and periodically carbon should be filtered over.

It would be better to start with a larger tank but if you have budget constraints you can't really go wrong with an Orca if you can stretch a bit more though you could go for the Aquamedic chromis these if I recall retail for under £600 and they are I think 35 gallons in volume and come with everything you need including a 150 watt metal halide.

thanks for the advice, seems like a lot of money for a small setup,so I think I will stick to my discus and move them into a bigger tank,Alan I use my vented water from an RO and have done for years. Thanks for the info though, quite a list lol.
