Can any one tell me what I can put in the same tank as 2 of the above which are about 18" long. They are very big but are gentle fish. One is a male and the other a female.Any comments gratefully received. Thank you in advance. Bethan |

Tank size is 6x2x2 |

|
even a 6x2x2 will be too small for the pacus as they grow |

I know I am currently saving to buy them a much bigger tank |

I think you are probably making things difficult for yourself if you add anything else to what must be a considerable load on your tank |

why not keep them on their own?....over the years i have realised its better to keep 2 fish happy and healthy than try to over stock!
(IMO)if you want more fish than just 2 then pass these on and get something more appropriate |

I will be honest i kept two pacu in a 6x2x2 that i "rescued" from a fishkeeper in blackpool who was keeping them in a 60x18x18 they nearly filled a dustbin each while transporting them home and the 6x2x2 was no where near the right size for them, i was lucky i managed to pass them on to someone with a tropical pond.
Good luck with the bigger tank. |

how do you know the sex of them? in the wild they will eat veggie stuff but in captivity they will eat anything including other fish, many are indeed x breeds and not true pacu some are capable of over three feet some stop at two, the problem is the bulk of these fish they are very inefficient eaters and need massive filters a tropical pond is the answer any tank mate is likely to get bitten and they love chewing heater cables |

I have researched these fish and can you sex them according to the shape and disposition of their fins. Their heaters are within cages because they sometimes take to sleeping on the heaters. At the moment they are eating brazil nuts which they enjoying cracking and eating. |

Eheim 2260 filters are the biggest on market and could cope, most big fish will mix, try a giraffe cat. But you do need big tank. |

I've got a Black pacu, he's out grown his tank and I'm trying to rehome him - I knew I had a problem but until I read this I didn't realise how bad it was! I didn't realise they liked Brazil nuts though - how big are the pieces you give them and what else do you feed yours on? |
