A bigger filter would be a good idea.
If I were you I'd go for a shoal of tetras and a group of corys. Possibly a pair of peaceful cichlids too. Decorate it with bogwood slate and have it planted with plants like java moss and cambomba - easy to keep. |

are you in a hard or soft water area? go for fish that are suited to your area's water
avoid live bearing fish like platy/guppy/mollies as they will breed fast and you will be over stocked real soon.
as you say tetras would be good and there are some real pretty ones out there ( Gold is one i like )
do your research on fish compatability as in a small comunity they will all need to get along you could even put up a post on the fish you think you will add ( remember not to add them all at the same time unless you can use filter media from your goldfish filter ready seeded)

that was going to be my next question about the filtration im not sure what sort of filter that is coming with this tank any idears?? see pic above. but i have a spare fluvel 2+ which might be better. would it be ok to use some of the filter media from one of my goldfish tanks to help with cycling this tank? |
05-01-2008 19:23 by -Rob C-
|
I'd go for the fluval instead of the little filter, using filter media for the goldfish tank would also be a good idea. |

|
yeh as Rob-c said use some of the goldfish filter media
i would remove some clean tank water from the goldfish tank and dunk the filter media a few times cleaning it but keeping the good bacteria.
Tina with the fluval+2 you could use one sponge and pack out the other side with the goldfish media, then in 3-4 weeks switch the goldfish media for the other fluval sponge. then alternate the cleaning of the sponges ( in tank water)
there are some very nice corry catfish on the market to choose from as for the other fish dont buy fish on impulse .......and some fish shops dont give sizes for adult fish |

2 dwarf Gourami
4 male guppies
6 neon tetra
6 glowlight tetra
2 dwarf corys
i wont be buying all of the fish at once!! i will be getting a few each week
i think im going to go with lots of plants, off to research them now lol |

|
one more thing dose anyone here breed any of the above fish in the london area? i would much rather buy from a breeder as my lfs is pretty ***!! although i can travel to one in central london which is quite good (forgot the name) |

Corys will do much better in groups, I'd go for atleast 4. |

|
could not find the dwarf image so here is the Sterba's corydoras
|
05-01-2008 21:58 by Tina c
|
So what do you thinkRobert are they all compatible? and if i got the 4 corys would that be ok with 22 fish |
05-01-2008 22:00 by Tina c
|
dwarf cory
|
05-01-2008 22:00 by robert.pope
|
tina it is sometimes difficult to get good dwarf Gourami
i have not had much luck with them and in my opinion ones often in shops develope ulcers
|
05-01-2008 22:09 by robert.pope
|
they should all live together as they are all peacfull fish the glowlights and neons do best in softer water tank than say the guppy more to the hard water.
your choice should be ok
i would include a (algi eating) fish not the chineese algieaters sold under the name algi-eater as they become agressive
shrimps are another option for cleaning tanks
|

|
thanks robert i might just start off with the smaller shoaling fish like the tetras and the corys to begin with then see how it goes, i just saw some pictures and fell for it lol |
05-01-2008 22:10 by -Rob C-
|
Some otto catfish will be good for algae eating, stay small too. |
05-01-2008 22:13 by robert.pope
|
Tina when i started fish keeping the stocking level was on surface area......and on yours it would be a maximum of 24" fish body length
not 2x12" fish
24x1" |

|
Otocinclus
|
05-01-2008 22:41 by Tina c
|
so i cant have 2 12" oscars than lol, so if i had say 20 1" fish that would be ok |
05-01-2008 23:28 by robert.pope
|
yeh i would go with that
others may beg to differ
build up to it as you said and you should not have any problems

About 40 years ago my first tank was vet similar, it was stocked as mr pope suggests with a dozen neon tetras, a small corydorus, and a pair of angel fish. The fish appeared to live quite happily together for many years.
you could put in some guppies purely to provide live food as they breed, 1 male 2 female.
good luck |

Hi there just a quick update the tank is doing fine, it has lots of plants which look good, i have more fish in the tank than i planned to have at this stage but they are all doing fine, i answered an add in my local paper someone was selling a "job lot" of fish which they were keeping in a 18" tank so i thought they would be fine in the 24" so far all is good.
List of fish
6 Neon tetras
4 male guppies
4 white cloud mountain minnows (i have since read that theese do better in coldwater not sure what im gonna do with them yet!)
1 male 1 female mollies
2 dwarf corydors
so 18 fish in all but i might put the minnows into one of the goldfish tanks ( and hope they dont get eaten!!!)
i am planning to get 2 more corys and that should be about it,
what does everyone think?

oh and if anyone in the london area wants any baby mollies just watch this space lol |
13-01-2008 22:57 by Tina c
|
i paid £10 for the 18 fish so i think i got quite a bargain!! what with getting the tank on ebay for only £36 all included, i spent about £10 on plants so im well happy with it. |

|
hello tina, looking good! i wouldnt add anymore fish if it were me, also the minnows will be ok,DONT put em in with the goldfish, cos they'll get munched |
14-01-2008 17:31 by robert.pope
|
it looks like you have used the small filter Tina
i can only add make sure you do regular waterchanges ,2 small changes are better than 1 big one |
14-01-2008 18:01 by Tina c
|
when the filter came its actually quite large, i looked it up and it looks quite powerfull, im going to leave the minnows and leave it all as is no more fish. |
