Hi there

I own a very cantankerous large Cichlid which I am lead to believe good be part Festae originating from south America !! He is about 10" in length and I aquired him when he was already fully grown with no background history except that no other fish can be put in with him ! He is so aggressive that he lunges at his glass tank if I touch it and sometimes partly lunges out of the water when I feed him his pellets !! I have named him 'Uncle Fester'!! His body unlike a true festae being red background is actually a dark olive colour and has black stripes running down. Does anyone know for sure what type of cichlid he is or if I was right to say that he is a Festae cross ? I will attach pictures to this so you can get a better idea ! Thanks.

It is a Mexican Tail spot cichlid.

Cichlasoma (Nandopsis) urophthalmus

Hi Paddy D

Thanks for your help on this. The fins certainly look smooth but cannot imagine their appearance to be normal for this fish ! I can only assume that some type of damage did occur earlier in Uncle Fester's life before I became his owner.

This is a Urophthalmus like Paddy said. The splits in the fins are common with this type of fish and will never heal up. I have got 4 large males and all have got splits in there fins.

in thinking Cichlasoma uropthalmus AKA Mayan Cichlid, URO of 'False' Red Terror

If there was URO in my LFS I would get it with out looking back.
