I`m building a hood for my 7ft tank.What wood is the best to use ?

marine ply, with a few coats of yaught varnish

i spose ya could use mdf? but make sure ya seal it well with varnish

mdf would have to be coated with primer and the only primer i know of is water based , you should only ever use polyurethane varnish with fish tanks, maybe you could consider upvc cladding it is water proof and very cheap (also available in loads of colours )

as telboy says seal it well!
i made my tank hood out of solid ash and then gave it 2 coats of danish oil!
it has a tight fitting condensation cover but it still turned a bit black from moisture!

dont do what i did ! i kept my hood to the minimum and from the lights it realy does get HOT!
my lights sit on the cover glass,and its a pain for maintaining
