hi i am new to fish keeping so please be aware of that if my questions are a bit naive.Yesterday i added four mollies to my tank and today i find that my guppies are fine nipping the mollies and have in fact killed one.
When i bought the mollies i was assured that they would be o.k.
i am of a mind to remove the guppies from the tank what do you think?

i wouldnt look at the guppies as culprits to be honest with you, they rarely manage to kill anything, abit of nibbling here and there like most fish do that from time to time, have you tried checking your water dcw...

i agree with woz,guppies arent known to be killers!you say you're a newbie? how long has the tank been setup,water parameters,did you acclimatise the fish?

Thanks for all the replies in reply the tanks been established 6 weeks and has had fish in it for 3. One more molly has died but things have settled down and its peaceful now.
The parameters using an api test kit are
ph = 7.5 nitrate= between 0-5 nitrite =0 ammonia = 0 temp =25.2c

params seem ok, did you acclimatise the new fish before putting em into tank?ive found that a lotta LFS livebearers dont do too well nowadays most are a very weak strain,in future try to access these type of fish from local breeders most are only too willing to pass em on...good luck with the rest of ya fish

Thanks for your reply telboy
i put the fish in the bag that they were in from the shop in the tank (lights out) for 15mins then slit the bag and let some tank water in, after a further 15 mins i released them into the tank then left the lights of for a further hour.
Despite these setbacks i have found this to be a great hobby and a completely new direction for me away from ham radio and electronics

doesnt sound like your doing anything wrong, whats the filter like in the tank? are the fish getting plenty of oxygen? but as telboy said, alot of the livebearer strains are weak anyway, so they can die on you for no apparent reason

the guppys may be pregnant and the molly could be in the guppys territory in which case the guppys would nip at em, dont think they would go as far as to kill em though,could the mollys have carried a disease from the shop?

Mollies prefer salt in the water and as telboy pointed out the strain of livebearers are weak,buy your next batch of livebearers from a uk breeder they are much healthier and cheaper good luck.

Thanks for all the replies lost another couple of mollys this week can only think there was a problem when i bought them the last one to die had a whiteish growth around her mouth so i have treated the water i also did a water test and things have changed in the last 7 days
ph=7.6 nitrate=10 nitrite=0 ammonia =0.25

I am doing another water change and fitting my external filter this weekend and will not buy any more fish for awhile until this tank settled.
what a bleeding carry on!

hello mate, dont worry too much bout ya nitrate ,but ammonia's not right! could be due to rotting fish etc...you're doing the right thing with the water changes,keep them going,could also try a mechanical remover like ammo lock,nitrazorb etc but this is short term you need to know whats causing the prob's...you think you got it bad with trops, ive just recently got into marine[bout a year now] you need to be a chemist/pharmacist brain damage eh? good luck matey
