I have a problem with a 48 x 18 x 15 tank.Sand substrate about 1/2" deep, rocks and terracotta tubes with a few plastic plants.Temp 26, airstone each side, 2 Tetratec 800 filters.2 banjos, about 8 corys, 2 small plecs and 12 clown loaches 2-4" long.Feed on pellets, granules, flake, frozen bloodworm, algae wafers and cucumber. Water parameters pH 7, nitrate, nitrate both at normal levels.
Water keeps going cloudy, it will be OK for a few days then go cloudy then clear up etc. Can't get to the bottom of it so I completely stripped it and washed or renewed everything.OK for 10 days then back to going cloudy again.
I have seven other tanks with no problems.Same kind of rocks , tubes and plants used without problems in some of these.
Anybody got any thoughs as this is driving me mad? |

your problem is cleaning everything, you have a bacteria bloom, dont ever empty the whole tank again, just do 10 - 20% water changes and let the bacteria build up, you also say about nitrite and nitrate being normal, you should have no nitrite and low nitrate for the fish to do well, use of bacteria to get things started again and it will soon clear up |

I had a similar problem due to the high bio load in my tank (this is not something I would expect with your stocking) I was getting a lot of particulates and at the time my filtration was purely biological so particles were kept in suspension resulting in slightly cloudy water.
It was easy to fix I just put some filter wool in the top of both of my canister filters.
Problem fixed.
You could try something similar.
Also instead of cucumber try frozen potato. If you slice a potato into half a centimetre thick sections and then freeze them they make a more stable food for veggies.
In order to use them you need to defrost them under hot water once defrosted they will sink and you will notice it has become a bit rubbery.
It won't fall apart in the same wqay that cucumber does and it won't break down and pollute in the same way that cucumber does. |

Thanks for all thoughts.tTank was initially running for 18 months so ne problem with bacteria being established.I use 2 filters and only clean half the media in 1 filter at a time.If you don't destroy the filter bacteria and save some water then a complete strip and clean creates no problems. I'll try the filter wool - nothing to use, and try the frozen potato. |

Keep us posted on this I had never suffered from cloudy water until I had my problem and I've kept fish for over 20 years its always interesting to assimilate more knowledge. |

I noticed you feed bloodworm be careful with it as it is very easy to develop a nasty allergy to it wash your hands thoroughly after handling it and I would suggesst staying out of the room the tanks in for at least 6 hours after feeding it and make sure the room is well ventilated.
Courtesy of my hobby related allergy the smell of bloodworm will induce severe hay fever like symptoms including a nasty weeze that will last for a week! Plus if I handle it and do not wash my hands properly I will develop a painful itchy rash where ever the stuff has touched me.
If you start to develop a sensitivity to it stop using it altogether as it will only get worse I am now allergic to mosquito bites the last time I was bitten my hand swelled up so much it looked like I was wearing a boxing glove. |

Nitrite 0.2 mg/l nitrate 7 mg/l ammonia 0.I have put filter wool in both internals. I have kept fish for over 30 years and have 7 tanks running at present.Only ever had this problem in this tank.I don't do or have anything different in this one which is why I am at a loss.
I have a slightly smaller tank in which I feed over twice as much cucumber and no cloudiness shows in this. |
