hello again! i have a aqua one tank, 25 liters for my green spotted puffers, i know its to small, but they're going in my tropiquarium when they're a bit bigger, anyway, they seem to be getting cloudy eye a lot, usually a film but with bits coming off the film. they have had it in the past and it has gone with water changes is it a common problem where they scrape it? shall i use meds or just keep the water clean? thanks a lot

Sounds like you've kind of answered it already yourself mate! Cloudy eye is often (not always) indicative of water quality problems.

Sorry to bombard you but....

Do you test for ammonia and nitrite?

How long they going to be in the 25 litre for?

How big are the fish and how many?

What filtration are you using?

I would think about 25-50% water change daily depending on how big the fish are and how many (treated for chlorine/chloramine and heavy metals) to be honest if they in a 25 litre.

That what i would do, others may say different

I wouldnt like to comment too much on meds right now, it might not be necessary and i've never kept puffers, but Melafix "might" be a good option if meds are needed

Sweet thanks mate, they are about 1.3 inch long.

Theres 2 puffers and a red claw crab to clean up.

i don't really test unless there is something wrong but i will do now you mention it, and i only just started using that dechlorinate stuff since someone gave me a bottle ha .

The filtration is a fluval 2+ internal filter with some carbon media.

I will move them to the other tank as soon as they it is worth it 3-4 inch probably as i will need to get rid of a lot of rasbora etc so i may as well make it worth while. i am hoping to move them to full marine soon, with some box fish, thanks a lot for the help buddy, im off to the pub to get drunk! Dom.

you might not get this reply until coming back from the pub then, dont do the water tests when drunk

As for your reply...

Okay so only 2.6" worth of fish plus the crab. I would still suggest a thorough water change routine, i imagined the puffers might be a bit bigger than 1.3", so i would try and do water changes maybe twice a week, perhaps 30% each time.

I have to stress this, as you have already noted improvements in the eyes with water changes. Its not a lot of water to change really, as the tank is small.

You dont want any bacterial problem to really take hold and then lose the fish.

I would chuck the carbon out the filter, its taking up valuable "space" for more biological filtration. Replace it with more spounge.

I would still do a couple of 50% water changes over the next few days, then settle down to 30% or a tad more twice a week, which is a lot i know, but thats what i would do with your set-up, i am an avid fan of good water changes! Usually i advocate 30% weekly but i think you need more.

Atleast go for 30-40% every 5 days or so mate, and make sure that filter is dealing with ammonia and nitrite and you are getting no detectable readings of ammonia and nitrite. If you are the water changes are even more important.

One tip, if you have another tank (i think you do) and you are getting ammonia or nitrite readings from your Puffer tank, you can steal some mature media from the other tank and put it in the Fluval 2+ in the Puffer tank.

agreed with Telboy, Fluval 2+ is part of the problem, BUT... with a 25 litre tank, anything bigger than a Fluval 2+ could turn the tank into a jacuuzi

Any chance of another small internal going into the 25 litre?

BY THE WAY, i dont think you will get away with growing these fish to 3-4" before you change the tank!!!!
