okay so i bought some MELAFIX which it says it is a anti-bacterial fish remedy that claims to help with damaged fins , i was wondering if this anti bacterial stuff will kill the bacterial that reside in my filter sponges? my other question is what causes my fishes fins to get damaged, they look like they are falling apart, which is why i bought the remedy.and how do i help fix the fin damage if i can not use the anti bacterial remedy |

There are quite a few ways the fins can get damaged, it can be fin rot which is bacterial, you can get anti fin rot treatment, also it can be caused by other fish nipping the fins of the affected fish, tiger barbs and other fish can cause this i found. I'm pretty sure melafix wont affect your filter pads.
i may be wrong but i think it is a natural mix of chemicals.
I would use the recommended dosage of the melafix. i may be wrong but it might not fix the problem properly so i would get some anti fin rot treatment, i picked some up in a garden center yesterday for a pound! Hope this helped! |

melafix,is a very good all round remedy for many things! its great for fin damage, just follow the instructions on the bottle,DO NOT use more than one treatment at any one time!!! you could end up poisoning the fish, be sure to remove any carbon based filter media, as this will counter act the remedy...if after using the melafix your problem is still there, then do a good water change add carbon to absorb any chemicals left, then remove carbon and add further treatment |

I have had good experience with Melafix, cured two cases of fin rot in comet goldfish with it.
As telboy says, water quality is the most important thing, if more than one of your fish has fin rot, the water quality is probably the problem.
It could also be caused by bullying, if one of your fish is nipping the fins of the others.
Josh, what kind of fish do you have, and have you tested the water? |

I have some platys, 2 mollys, one bala shark, and a gold gourami, there is not a lot of bullying going on mostly the gold gourami chases the bala shark but the bala shark is to fast for it to catch. I have tested the water and have had a problem keeping the ammonia level down which i am currently working on.
Thanks guys |

MELAFIX great stuff,i had a stingray that knocked the guard of the heater then layed oh the heater, burnt a large area of the disc which eventualy droped of. i put the melafix in and 10 days later it was as good as new.I have 1 tip buy the pond melafix its the same stuff but its 4 x stronger.work out how much you need with the normal melafix then dose the tank with a 1/4 of that amount of pond melafix , it saves you a lot of money and the bottle gose a long way |

i used melafix in a tank with a red tailed catfish, the big cat became very ill very quickly and recovered after three huge water changes, i am not much one for coincidence, red tail cats can be very twitchy with chemicals |
