Cichlid fish |

since i added a new cichlid to my fish tank it has become boss, Big time! she is the most aggressive one in the tank, but she keeps chasing the other fish and flickering. i am wondering what the flickering is? i think it is a female lombadoi. and i am wondering how can i sex the fish in there? i would like some breeding pairs but im not sure if they're suitable. i will try to get a pic soon. |

the "flicking" is usually a show of aggression with Malawi's. What you have there is a Lombardoi, also known as Kennyi.
Females tend to be blue in colouration and males more yellow.
I have had both sexes, had to move my male on that i inherited with the tank, as he went nuts after the move!
Reputation as one of the more aggressive Malawi's.
Often not recommended unless very experienced owner with a big tank

you may find it happens more immediately after feeding. I'd be careful with getting more of these! |

the flicking i mean, but its generally a showing off tactic, many peeps confuse it for a parasite infection in Malawi's (although in theory it could be parasites causing the flicking) but from your description I'd say it's behavioural and sending a message to other fish. |

Oh right sweet, Yeah its dark blue with black ish stripes, stunning colours. it seems to just chase the rest about, it only really fights with my bristlenose plec. i will post a picture of my tank, could you tell me if its overstocked please. thanks m8 |

One tanks a tropiquarium 88 i was given, it has a fluval 304 external. my malawi tank is a light glow tank. i think it is 27 gallons. some sound dude emailed me on here saying he needed to get rid of. that has 2 fluval 3 + filters with venturi bits on. |

if thats UK Gallons, i am thinking your Malawi tank is 120 litres?
i have been known to regularly breach "normal" stock rules, but i dont think even i would keep a Lombardoi in a 120 litre mate, not with a bunch of other fish.
You might get lucky, but the Lombardoi will get to 5-6", and its the males that are usually more aggressive! I would deffo scrap the idea of adding a male to your tank! Very risky!
So what fish you currently for in your Malawi set-up?

Ill get a pic when i can find the camera mate, but so far theres 1 bristlenose, 1 gibby plec, 2 yellow labs. 3 orange ones. 2 elec blue johanni. 1 brown one. 3 random blue ones, not sure of many names sorry. 1 brichardi tang. and a MELANOCHROMIS CHIPOKAE i think |

Chipokae have a nasty reputation for aggro too, although mine was fine and that was at 4"
Do you test for ammonia, nitrite and nitrate Dominic? |

Yeah the waters good. had to do a full change since my dad overfed the fish big time over the weekend, not many of the cichlids show agression at all, more peaceful than i expected for my first cichlid tank. only the boss is chasing all the time. sory about the wait for the pics, im having an ass of a time trying to get the shite card reader working. |

nice pics, good use of ocean rock and i love the planted tank too.
you'll have to think about a bigger tank at some point i think.... but if you keep on top of the water changes might be okay for a while i guess.
If the Kennyi becomes too much i would remove it, but you definitly done well with the ocean rock, plenty of cover for fish.
Personally, with your tank, i'd be doing 40% water change every 7 days.
What are you using for food with the Malawi's |

thanks dude, can you id any of the malawis? is that a lombadoi the big blue and black one?? i feed them crushed dry shrimp and krill, cheapy pound shop pellets, flakes, bloodworm and live river shrimp. i change the water every week, 5 gallons i think my container is. |

blood worm is no-no for Mbuna type Malawi mate. Try to get more veggie foods in their diet, be it courgette, cucumber or specific Malawi pellets.
I am not good on ID's, not good at all, havent been doing Malawi for long enough, I'll have a go, back soon, need to consult Google though! |

ok mate thanks, i put cucumber in for the plec to eat, but the cichlids don't seem fussed on it. i look through the cichlid sites but they all look similar, i will try though. thanks bud! |

thanks m8, them crabs are rubbish anyway. i had 3 but they all died for some reason, the last one i found with no claws after it shredded. so the puffers found it an easy meal! lol |

bottom left yellow one is a yellow lab, the bottom middle right is some sort of melanochromis ( i dont think its a auratus though) the horizontal striped ones are melanochromis johanni and the yellow ones in the middle look like pseudtropheus socolofi( i may be wrong) btw im taking about pic no 1. |

Oh i read that in order to thrive and breed they need brackish water, they had a chilaxing pad out of the water but since they died i raised it to the top. no need anymore thanks for the id mate, i will research more into the fish now i have some names! cheers chaps |

they dont need brackish water at all, just clean well oxygenated water with a ph at around 7.5 to 8 |
