I know this pops up a lot, usually followed by "water changes" as the generic answer of choice, which tends to annoy peeps who already do loads of water changes and live in areas where tap-water is anything between 20-50 mg/l of nitrate.....

However, excluding "external" measures like RO, Nitragon etc.....

Is there anything out there (filter wise, media wise etc) that has seperated itself from the others in effectiveness or peeps feel so good about from their own nitrate readings that they want to blow its trumpet?

For example API Nitrazorb?

Juwel Nitrate Sponge? which did nothing for my nitrates

Tetra Easy Balance? i think the science of how it works is quite disputable from memory?

What (if anything) is out there that i can use in my tank/filter to try and drop nitrates a bit?

Dont keep any fish in the tanks usually works

The only thing I have used apart from Purigen was a home made slow filter, water travelling slowly through a lot of fine media will eventually produce an aneorobic filter that removes Nitrate, but the flow has to be slow and it takes a long time to build the bacteria colony. I think you can do it with any media but the flow must be slow, use a bit of the low oxygen water coming out of the regular filter system.

yeh, i am thinking about going "fishless" Keith, sick of these Nitrates.

might just stack the tank full of ocean rock, plastic plants and maybe keep a couple of shrimp

Sounds the business, I have never heard any criticism of Seachem products. It is my guess that you would need a lot of this stuff and again the water flow would have to be relatively slow. I think these sort of systems can work if you do not have too high bioload, it would probably not be able to cope if you were trying to grow fish on ie feeding a lot.

you use Matrix Telboy?

are you in the Matrix? can you dodge bullets?

seriously, tell me more about the Matrix, how much it cost you?

Do you even need it if you only using RO?

actually yes i have dodged a fully loaded pistol in germany when i was minding an old rockabilly star from 50s usa,big ol german teddy boy pointed the gun at me + evrything went into slo-mo, bang-whoosh,saw the bullets buzzin past my head but i digress, matrix is like small stones as i said goes in a media sock/bag in ya filter, works well on no2 no3 phos but needs replacing every 2-4 weeks depending on stocking levels

Tel, i am almost certain you dont have to renew Matrix like that, just had this conversation with a guy on another forum thats been using the same matrix for almost a year.

Its similar principles to other media like Ceramic rings, it might eventually lose some effectiveness when or if the pores get clogged, but this takes quite a while, much longer than 2-4 weeks

are you sure its Seachem Matrix and you are not just confused about the film and your exploits in Germany?
