Fish Lifeless |

my guppies are lifeless, and one of my female guppies is losing color on her tail in. and sometimes gasp big gulps of water. I gave them food but they just ignore it or pas by it. I did a 40% water change today and, the water looks even worse, merkier. What on earth is going on here? An answer to this problem would take a load of worry off my shoulder. |

water changes allways make water murky, it will setle in a while.
what are your tank paramiters? |
01-08-2005 09:49 by KnowItAll
|
Sounds like you have excess ammonia or nitrite in your tank.
As kittykat asked - what are your water parameters? |

soz parameters |

I don't know much about fish tank cleanig. what thingamagig do you need for testing ammonia and nitrites? |

you can get tests at a LFS. you can get ingividual ones for about £10 each (where i live) or a number of them in a £15-£20 set (these wont last as long though as they will include less of everything).
OR you can try asking your LFS to test the water for you.
do a test for nitrates as well, if you can & i'd like to know the temp, type of filter you've got and water change info. |

Look ate this fish carefully, would you say that is a healthy fish???

|
How about this fish?
|
06-08-2005 01:58 by W. Jake
|
They Don't EAT! Grr, it can get so frustrating sometimes. |
06-08-2005 01:58 by W. Jake
|
I don't know, i'm probebly paranoid, but if you saw how they swim, then I think you would agree that they arent well fish. |

I totally cleaned out the tank got out all the water and washed the gravel like crazy and the plants. I doubt there would still be nitrates in the water. Yes I have also treated the water before placing the fish inside. |
06-08-2005 02:01 by W. Jake
|
No I did not use any sope or chemicals to wash the tank. |
06-08-2005 02:03 by W. Jake
|
I used this to treat the water. It makes tapwater safe for fish.
|

Soooo, any problems I could be advised of? Some diseas water quality? The water temperature is 79-80 degrees. The type of filter I have is Whisper Power Filter 10. Yes I did replace the filter cleaning pad thing. |

Could it be what DAMIEN said?

looks like shock to me... is the fish's tail clamped?
does the one near the surface always stay neer the surface?
how long has the tank been set up?
how long have you had fish for?
40% water change is a bit much... you should do no more than 30% at a time.
when you washed the tank, did you use old water to wash the filter or the new or tap?
did you change all the water or did you keep some of the old?
i never use water treatment,so i don't know much about it. i let my water age naturaly.
try giving your fish a treat... see if they'll eat that... try a boiled pea: don't forget to take the shell off and slightly squash the 2 halves. |
06-08-2005 18:19 by W. Jake
|
The one near the surface deosn't stay near the surface. |

wont the baked pea mess up the water and kill my fish? |
06-08-2005 18:23 by W. Jake
|
I don't know what you mean about fishes tail clamped, but the orange one, that's the way his tail goes when he swims fast or just swims I think. |
06-08-2005 18:24 by W. Jake
|
Argh! Sorry about my messy writing im in a hurry. |
06-08-2005 18:49 by W. Jake
|
I have just noticed, the orange one stays near the top most of the time. |
06-08-2005 18:50 by W. Jake
|
What do you mean by shock? Is it a disease, can it be treated? |
06-08-2005 20:04 by kittykat
|
shock is when their conditions change dramatically. ex: full water change. watch your fish very carefully for the next few days. it is not a desease, but i've heard that "Melafix" can help.
BOILED pea, not baked. you know the ones you get frozen, & then you have to boil? it will not mess up the water, but if they don't eat all of it, take out the leftovers before the next feed. one pea every few days/week is enough.
a tail is clamped when the fish doesn't open it fully.
NOTE filter floss/wool should always be washed in the old water from the tank so that the bacteria on it do not die |
06-08-2005 21:19 by W. Jake
|
How much of a % does the boiled pea garantee that the fish will eat it? |
06-08-2005 21:27 by W. Jake
|
Must get MELAFIX!! Sorry I just don't want to loose those two guys, they are really awsome looking guppies. I would really want the one with the yellow and black tail to mate one of my female and have awsome looking fry. |
06-08-2005 21:30 by W. Jake
|
How could they stay alive so long since they never eat (accept for the specs of food that float around in the water). But sometimes they just pic up a spec of food and spit it out. |
07-08-2005 05:11 by W. Jake
|
Well the orange one went bye bye, the yellow and black one is next. |
07-08-2005 05:16 by W. Jake
|
Is it ok if I place my yellow and black tail guppy in a little fish breeder? He is not going to try to get out anymore as he is very weak. And while he's in the breeder place 1 BOILED pea without the crust split it in two and see if he eats overnight? |
07-08-2005 05:17 by W. Jake
|
Please answer soon, I don't want to loose this one, he was one of my favorites. |
07-08-2005 08:49 by W. Jake

He is gone too now. |

i'm sorry that i couldn't reply...
there are no garantees in fishkeeping. i know what it feels like to loose a favoirite fish: .
how are your other fish? |

07-08-2005 22:23 by W. Jake
|
Can Shock spread? |
07-08-2005 23:27 by kittykat
|
shock is NOT a desease... it's kinda like in humans... everyone is effected in their own way...
i recomend that you do not get any new fish for at least a month, untill things settle down a bit.
you realy need to get your water tested NOW. it is VERY important. if the shock is caused by wrong water parameters, then you WILL be able to do something about it. |

I thibk I'm gonna get a water test kit to test my ammonia, ntrites, nitrates, ect. Would that be a good idea instead of running off to the local pet store for one? |
08-08-2005 05:10 by W. Jake
|
I think one of my fishes tail is clamped, either that or one of the fish very artisticaly bit off a chunck of the tail fin and made it a perfectely roundish shape. |
08-08-2005 09:16 by kittykat
|
the sooner you'll get one, the better
let me know the results as soon as you can . |
08-08-2005 09:19 by kittykat

ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, pH tests are essential. |

When you clean your tank out make sure you dont clean ALL the water. Take about a third of the water at most and always use water treatment (tap safe) to any new water added.
once you've got your kit. test it, if something is way too high take 20% of the water out and replace it with treated water. When you clean your filter take the sponges out and rinse them in old tank water. This is to help keep the good bacteria in.
Food wise only feed enough for them to eat in 2mins.
If the water parameters arent right it may stop the fish from eating (a kinda self-destruct effect) but I'm not too sure on that one.
If they're spending a lot of time by the surface try getting an air stone as it may be there's not enough oxygen in the water.
GOOD LUCK. Hope that helps a little |
