For a malawi community your best bet is a synodontis multipunctatus. It comes from lake Tanganyika so is used to hard alkaline waters. Some specimens are very attractive and are relatively priced in aquaria. It has a habbit of laying its eggs with the cichlids eggs. The catfish eggs hatch first and then eat all the cichlid eggs! |

i would prefer something without the habit of laying there eggs with the ciclids eggs but thanks for information about the multipunctatus |

try syn, petricola or nayasse both lake cats |

Only keep one synodontis multipunctatus then. |

I have 6 Petricolor in my Malawi set-up, they are also reputed to act like "cuckoo's". I have a lot of baby Malawi's, with not one baby Syno to be seen.
This suggests to me that the "cuckoo" problem maybe uncommon. I personally would be happy if it did happen occassionally |

i have had multipunctatus breeding twice some years ago and only with large mouth brooders. they did not bother substrate spawners at all. unfortunately no fry survived past about half an inch, i suspect they probably starved but not sure. This syno breeds like this on purpose and is not uncommon!!! not sure about petricolor?

Hi,
There are several Rift lake catfish.
One species of syno is from lake malawi S.nyasse - this is medium sized - about 6" and a nice chunky cat. It does not practice mouthbrooding. But it can be a tricky fish to get hold of but are available.
The tanganikans that are commonly available would be multipunctatus, petricola , dwarf petricola and polli.
Polli is not common and is not a cuckoo spawner.
The others are cuckoos, they like company and do not do very well by themselves, so buy 4-6. They may spawn with your mouthbrooders, but it would not be ever spawn! They are great fun to watch and the babies are very easy to pass on. The group behaviour makes them by far my favourite syno's

I'd suggest Petricola, they are very similar but smaller than the multipunctatus and look great in a shoal of 6+, they should not be kept singulary.

You could try a bit of an unusual one they take some finding Synodontis Brichardi from lake tanganyka.
