everything that i read about stingrays told me that i would probably lose my first one, but i never expected to come home from work to find my 16" tigershovelnose cat with a stingray tail hanging out of his mouth and a massive belly. how was this possible? i know the tsn has a big mouth but my stingray was 8" across. i quickly picked up the tsn and rubed his belly so he spat out the ray but it was too late. does anyone know why this happened? the tsn was very well fed and has never eaten a tank mate before and there is smaller fish in the tank. i had only been out for three hours and i fed them before i left. i have lost fish before but i had become very attatched to "ray" no i am hesitant about buying another ray because not only have i lost one of the best fish i have ever owned but i just lost £70, i only had him for about 2 months. |

Sorry to hear about Ray.
Although the ray was 8" don't forget that the bulk of the fish will fold up when eaten. Maybe the ray was ill? |

i dont think he was ill, i fed him normally in the morning and when i went out he was busy digging around in the sand. |

On the plus side at least you rescued your tiger shovelnose.
If you are going to try a ray again I would suggest you try and find one that is at least 12" in disc size this will cost a lot more but hopefully it would be safe from the tiger shovelnose. The risk of course is that the ray decides to predate on your other tank in habitants.
I like to keep rays in a community type set up but it is always a risk I am beginning to think dedicated ray set ups are better for the rays as time goes on.
I hope you have better luck with your next ray. |
