Is my yellow lab ill? |

Hi, I'm really worried about my yellow lab, is it normal for the colour to fade? I cant see any problems, he's still swimming around and although he's not eating as much he's still eating. He's near enough white now, there's a few patches of yellow on him still and his black markings are as visible as normal. I've searched on the net and I'm out of ideas.
Any help would be good. |

does his skin look healthy and firm or dull almost felt like malawis can dramaticly lighten or darken their colour but it seems strange that he still has yellow patches its usually the whole body colour that lightens or darkens sounds like a fungal infection to me! but hard to tell without looking sorry, |

If your labidochromis caeruleus is turning white that is not normal. Providing water quality and chemistry are correct it is likely a disease or parasite problem. Take him out of the tank into a smaller one on his own. Give him some wide range disease tretment for a week or two. Also try bathing him for 3-5 minuites in salt water with a salt content (specific gravity) of 1.022. This should kill any external parastitic infections. |

do not put it in a salt bath as this could kill it
malawis are very salt intolrant
labs can lose there colour when not in breeding condition and as they get older the yellow will fade |

As Rob says salt and malawis are a definate no no. Is this the only lab in the tank?
If so that is probably the reason for the loss of colour what are you feeding your malawi's? |

I was forgetting about the salt and malwi part. Whenever there is a question like this up I always say to treat it with salt and disease treatment - completely forgot it was a Malawi species we are dealing with. |

He is one of 6 labs, all the others are a good colour. He's eating the spirulina pellets I've been feeding him. There seems to be nothing wrong with him apart from the colour. It seems really patchy but he is now the same colour as the females I introduced a few days ago. Is he changing sex? is he hiding? |

sounds like its a sub dominant male if it is starting to fade and look like a female
i take it you have a nice bright yellow male in the tank as well
if so other males will fade to look like females to avoid being beaten up by the dominant male |
