Hi, can anyone help? I have lost a lot of goldfish in my pond over the last week. Water is spot on, plenty of oxygen, rest of fish feeding well, no signs of disese on the fish, a couple seem to have a bit of fin rot, but no other signs of anything. |

have you checked for parasites? |

Also what are the water quality levels for ammonia and nitrite? |

Is the problem restricted to one type of goldfish i.e shubunkins or comets? Or is it restricted to just small fish or large fish? Or is it relatively new additions that are dying or long term residents.
Fin rot is often caused by poor water quality what are the following levels.
Ammonia
Nitrite
Nitrate
PH
Temperature
I suspect the recent heat may be causing problems this can be dealt with by adding a powerful air pump to the system (one specifically designed for ponds).
What filtration do you use and how many inches of fish do you have and how many litres/gallons is the pond.
Have you done anything new to the pond in the last week or 2 such as disturb the silt at the bottom of the pond.
Sorry for so many questions but they will enable us to help. |

Also have you used or your neighbours used any weed killer or insecticide in the last few days. If this is likely you are going to have to do a masive water change on the pond I hope you do not have a hose pipe ban, if you do it is normally just a telling off that you will recieve so it might be worth the risk make sure you use a good dechlorinator. |

Thanks for all of your advice, still no obvious reasons why they died but the deaths do appear to have stopped |

We had a similar problem to this about two years back, my dad lost nine large fish in 24hrs, but everything seemed ok no obvious deaths etc, he just had commone goldfish, comets and shubunkins. His neighbour lost 2 koi in the same period, and a neighbour across the road lost about 4, further down the street someone lost a few as well. We never really got to the bottom of it but we live near an industrialised area and wondered if their had been some sort of leakage. The thing is it would not expain why other ponds were unafected, especially as my Dad's pond had the same sort of set up as ours and we had no losses and only live about half a mile away. The only thing we could put it down to was heat and lack of oxygen although all the affected ponds had filtration systems and pumps in place. All very odd, can;t help with a cause but at least it might help to knoe others have suffered this phenomena. |
