As a Discus purchaser you just may be tempted by traders advertising online with "buy one - get one free" types of offers or a bright and colorful website. Or general tropical fish shops telling you that they have the "best Discus at the cheapest prices".
Our advice to anyone considering an online Discus purchase is to do plenty of research as the internet is littered with horror stories of unscrupulous dealers selling poor quality, short lived fish and offering poor after sales service to unhappy customers. (UK distance selling laws can be a useful reference if you encounter poor service from online sellers.)
In the case of purchasing from a general tropical fish shop we advise you to visit the place and have a look at their stock and then visit a real Discus specialist to compare the quality, health and condition of the fish you are about to spend your money on.
Following these suggestions may help you to become an avid, successful Discus keeper.
During your research you may encounter product recommendations for a certain breeder of Discus stating that their Discus are easier to keep as they are happy in "tap water" or are "tap water hardened". This is merely a sales pitch to make people think they need different conditions to other Discus from different breeders, are more hardy and require less maintenance.
We have experience of keeping that particular breeders fish, over a number of years and did not notice any difference between the requirements of these fish or any other breeders fish.
Our Discus are bred and raised in Malaysian tap water and are held at our purpose built Discus facility, here in the UK, in Durham tap water. (the river Wear is too far away for us to use that water.)
