1. Tropheus duboisi “Bemba” – Congo Variant Not Tanzania

This rare variant of Tropheus duboisi hails from the Bemba region in the Congo, not from the more commonly seen Tanzanian localities such as Maswa, Kape Kabogo, or Halembie. These Congolese duboisi are descendants of wild-caught specimens, making them a true representation of the original genetics from that region.

Key Differences – Congo vs. Tanzania Variants:
• Banding: Some Bemba individuals exhibit a narrower white band, and in some, the band is completely absent—a contrast to the broader, more uniform bands seen in Tanzanian varieties.
• Body Shape: These Congo duboisi are slightly different in body shape, often appearing more robust or differently proportioned than their Tanzanian counterparts.
• Head Coloration: The head shade is also distinctive, with subtle color differences unique to the Bemba line.

These fish are particularly special as they coexist in Lake Tanganyika with Tropheus sp. “Black Bemba” Orange Flame —another rare and sought-after variety. Because most hobbyists are familiar only with the Tanzanian strains, true Congo duboisi from Bemba remain rare in the trade and in collections.

2. Tropheus sp. “Red Moliro”

Origin: Moliro, near the southern tip of Lake Tanganyika, Democratic Republic of Congo DRC

Tropheus sp. “Red Moliro” is a beautiful and bold African cichlid known for its vibrant red to deep burgundy coloration, especially in adults. Juveniles are usually darker with less intense color, which gradually brightens as they mature. Their body shape is typical of the Tropheus genus—stocky, muscular, with a prominent snout adapted for grazing.
