Blue Ramshorn Snail – Planorbis corneus
Totally safe to keep with fish, shrimp, snails and most importantly will not touch your plants.
A great creature to safely and efficiently cycle a new tank.
They eat various types of algae including the hair varieties as well as any detritus/uneaten fish food, dead/decaying plants.
They can be used in hydroponics projects as well as a source of fertiliser for edible plants.
Also, they are an unbeatable food for puffers, loaches and certain cichlids.
Preferred water parameters:
- pH 6.5 and up (they need calcium/magnesium to grow healthy shells),
- Temperature between 60 and 80F (15 -27ºC) so can be housed in unheated tanks too.
They are hardy and extremely easy to keep and will tolerate most conditions, however, they can overrun your tank if you’re a messy fishkeeper or overfeeding your aquaria ;)
Their maximum size (the ones pictured) is about 1.5cm in diameter.
Breeding is extremely easy. They are hermaphrodites and lay fertilised eggs in small clutches of up to 15 pieces.
I will always select the biggest specimens available for you but the size may vary due to demand.
All my water creatures are kept in Severn Trent water with NO salt addition:
KH 80ppm (x 0.056) = 4.5
GH 180ppm (/ 17.1) = 10.5
