I put an ad on your site... and got a response the individual suggested that they would send me a cheque for £3500 for a £1000 purchase and would I send them back the difference, via western union. I have heard of a scam along these lines where the vendor sends the extra money back only to find that the original cheque is bounced after quite a period of time... more than the 3-7 days... This person is sending out at present. Same old recipe, seems they are moving around Europe more - just laugh and delete. (Feb 05): This person is sending out at present (Feb 05): This person is really hammering the adverts at present: A recent scam - notice (a) bad grammar (b) indirect payment method. If you get anything like this, simply laugh and delete. Here is a good example of bad spelling thaat indicates a foreign scammer pretending to be in the UK: Hello, I am okay with the condition as it is and i will be glad to buy everything from you.I express satisfactory to what you have said of it.Guess i is really worth purchase.I will like to carry on with the purchase.I will like to have it the way it is. I wont be viewing before purchase cos am on a business tour but presently in Republic of Ireland but i will like to purchase and have it delivered down here asap.I will be responsible for the picks up.In such that,i will have my secretary arrange for someone to come over and pick it up from you and have it shipped down after payment is made to you.guess you understand. Payment will be made to you.I will have my client issue you the cheque.so i will instruct him to send you the payment(£185)in check.so once the payment gets to you,my secretary will set up motion to come over to pick up from you and have it delivered down here.Guess the arrangement is well understood.so there,provide me with the following details ... once this datas are provided,i will forward it to my client to send the payment over to you.i will be looking forward to hear from you soon. A classic non-UK example of shipping and indirect purchasing to avoid: thanks for the quick response.plz i'm not located in Uk but i have a client who will send you a cheque on my behalf for the payment of the tank.I also know oof a very good shipper who can come to your doorstep and pick up the tank without no complication or stress.i really like the condition of the tank and its the kind of tank i have being searching for.plz advise asap.thanks. I notice the larger warning, which is great, but PLEASE can you warn that a cheque can still bounce up to 30 days after it's cleared. This is what happened to me, the bank cleared the cheque and after I send all the money back to these people I found the cheques was a pretend - fraudlent cheque with a made up sort code etc. The banks clear first then ask questions later, the first you know is when the bank send you a letter saying your overdrawn or the cheque was a fraud. From Aquarist Classifieds user Mark Bolton, showing a classic scam method: Hi have received a few emails from would be rip-off merchants offering £1200 and £2000 for my tank, deducting my price and sending the remainder minus my expenses plus a little bit "extra" for myself (they are so generous). One was from Romainia, another was from someone doing missionary work in South Africa, and others. It could be so easy to be suckered in with the promise of extra cash for the inconvienience of a western union payment. Beware dont get ripped off!. I told them where to go and what to do when they got there. A month ago or so, an ad has been placed my a fishkeeper that has lost mony due to a scam. In the ad it said, the scammer used banker cheques and as their own shipper. I recieved two such emails, which one has posted below: "Hello, Am Bob St*ne,I saw your advertisement and I am seriously interested in buying your albino zebra male (4 inches SL),which the last price is £9 each and i will like to know how many you have for sale right now and I will like you to provide me with the picture via mail to see if you have it and furnish me with the current profile and condition and regards to the shipping...I'll arrange for the shipping myself and my mode of payment is by a certified cheque,If this is alright with you...do get back to me immediately with your name,contact phone number and address..... It may be an idea to put in your advert that if overseas buyers are interested in your products, they need to be aware that nothing will be dispatched until the above happens and that any fraudalent cheques sent will be handed to the Police. This may well stop them from replying to your ad in the first place. If you are selling a large quantity of product and a geniune overseas buyer comes forward, ask for their address and telephone details, then ring them to check them out. I think we need to remember that there are still some geniune people still out there. And ask yourself, as one member already has, why on earth would someone want to pay more for shipping goods to another country than the product is worth ? dont we have fish shops abroad then ? of course we do! I sell to the trade via the internet myself and I try to be very dubious about people to avoid giving me their address and contact details. Tell your friend that you already owe someone the money, I can't see that he would be willing to issue a cheque to me before he would to you, As I say when you have the money, we can conduct a deal, but not before! Note: We recommend you just delete any purchase offers that indicate inflated sums of money and payment associated with cheque difficulties. Hi, this is an update to all previous emails. This is a caution to all sellers. There are many people posing to be buyers that are complete frauds. These people will usually email you from abroad and will send you cheques into the thousands then instruct you to forward the balance (after taking out the cost of your item) to them, and that a shipper will collect the item. These cheques that they send are usually stolen or closed accounts. Please do not forward any money or release any of the goods for sale untill the money is fully cleared. Remember that if a cheque is returned (bounced) you might be charged from your bank, also that even though you may of put these cheques into your account and the balance shows the money is in, this figure is temporary untill the cheque clears, so please allow at least 5 working days to clear. If you are unsure as to course of action ask the buyer to pay directly into your account or pay by pre-printed bankers cheque. This can be done from anywhere in the world. I can say based on the number of emails that I have received that anybody posing as: J*mes Peters (sending cheques that have been reported stolen for sometime), T*rry Br*ce, Sm*th J*hnson, An International Orphanage home, L*xar Sm*th, V*ctoria P*rkins, are all frauds. If you are uncertain as to sell to an international customer, ask yourself one question, "why would anyone without asking any in-depth questions about a product, agree instantly to buy an item, then pay for a shipper (which would cost a lot with aquatic goods) and ask you to forward the balance." wouldnt it be easier, cheaper and quicker to purchase the item closer to home. I hope this information is of use to anyone. (Contact the police in any case to prevent others losing out). To all, Jane just recently reported that someone was trying to scam her. The same happened to me a few days ago. I was contacted by someone, "Nicole Mike from Brussels", who wanted to buy my fish tank. I was already suspicious because my tank is only worth £39 and she said she would get his shipping agent to pick it up. Then the story got even weirder; she would even pay me an extra 50quid to compensate me for my efforts. So, she tried the old trick " I have got a friend in the UK who ows me £2000. He will buy the tank off you and pick it up, but you have to send me a cheque with the remaining difference". These people are really testing my patience. Suffice to say, be aware! Always ask for address and telephone number and verify it immediately, before going any further. Then contact the buyer and discuss money and pick-up terms. Never accept any cheques unless that person can produce some sort of guarantee, bank cards, or ID. I would rather drive to a cash point together with the buyer than to accept a cheque.
