I have finally ordered my Theiling Rollermat after thinking about it for weeks. This will be for my marine fish-only tank.
I often use filter socks, but get fed up of the regular task of cleaning them. So, the Theiling Rollermat seems to offer a solution - though very pricey.
I also want to try to get away with not using a protein skimmer, to noisy for my office. With the Rollermat I should not need to use one.
So, should be delivered in a few days. I used the link below as he also matches up the correct plumbing fitments for me.
I have no sump, just a weir. Mine will be placed on top of the tank.
Apparently, this water filtration method will even catch ich parasites. Apparently the filter roll can last for 3 months or so.
Will let you know how effective the unit is.
Update after fortnight: This is a really effective water polisher and waste remover. I now do not use my skimmer. The water (fish only marine) is clearer than ever before. It is nice to see the waste simply rolled away permanently. Operation is quiet once correctly plumbed in. I honestly have no negatives, except maybe the size of the unit and its cost. ... At last ... no more filter socks to clean out.
UPDATE: February 2016: My aquarium water is crystal clear. I cannot believe how much gunk the rollermat removes from the water. I also added some purigen loose on the coral sand, to boost water quality further. A roll does seem to last a long time. I am going to keep the rollermat in place permanently.
The disadvantages are the large size, and the initial expense. I have not used a skimmer since installing it.
The unit is zero maintenance, set and forget. Superb.
UPDATE: March 2016: The unit still performs really well. I am about to change the filter roll for the first time. The roll was used up faster than it should because I made the mistake of adding some loose purigen in the actual unit, thinking the water flow would work well with the purigen, but it clogged up the filter roll a bit. Lesson is not to add any loose media in the unit, only in a net bag. Water though is very clear and polished, with no skimmer being used. Fish all in good health.
