BIOLOGY OF Garra rufa
I believe the great fish explorer Heckel first described them in 1843, they are popularly known as a ‘Turkish’ fish but are also found in, Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon and Syria. They spend there time as a benthopelagic dweller feeding on aufwuchs which is a word describing small animals and plants such as algae growing on rocks etc.
They are a ray finned fish (Actinopterygii) in the order of Cypriniformes in the family Cyprinidae. This is a massive family of fish and includes carp and goldfish.
At the time of writing they are not on an endangered species watch list. Although exports from Turkey appear to have been banned.
It is widely understood that their dermal healing properties are due to a chemical secreted from exocrine glands similar to surfacant groups such as the alkylphenol ethoxylates as Di-Ethanol (sometimes written Diethanol. This is a weaker similar chemical to the one used in cosmetic treatments which has the biochemical formulation:
With the Middle East having some of the oldest civilisations in the world, it would be near on impossible to pin point the first human/fish symbiotic relationship with Garra rufa. It would have been bathers swimming in rivers or hot pools that would have noticed their voracious appetites for dead skin.
An interesting thing to note about Garra rufa is the distribution of taste buds, they contain taste buds not only on the mouth but lips, lateral and ventral areas, forehead, operculum and dorsal–pelvic–pectoral–anal fins (Cinar, K Et al 2008).
